Since its amazing renovation and revitalization two years ago, The Earl Strand Theatre on Marietta Square has hosted some of the finest talent in the Atlanta area. From theatrical productions to musical and comedy performances, The Strand has become the place to go for high quality entertainment. This weekend's audience can expect a special treat. Some of Cobb County's most notable figures and leaders will take to the stage this Friday and Saturday, as they perform Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys."
Although the cast members are not professional actors, they have been dedicated to learning and rehearsing their parts. The lead roles in the show will be played by Marietta City Councilman and Assistant District Attorney Van Pearlberg, and Pearlberg's friend and community actor Murray Sarkin. The well-known comedic play tells the story of Willie Clark, played by Pearlberg, and Al Lewis, played by Sarkin, a broken yet once-famous vaudeville act whose animosity for each other is brought to the forefront when they are invited to reunite for a CBS special on the history of comedy.
The cast is rounded out by former Assistant District Attorney and now private attorney Bert Reeves, as Clark's nephew, Ben, who talks the two performers into joining the CBS show. Kim Gresh, president of SA White Oil Co., and Cassandra Buckalew, owner of The Historic Marietta Trolley have roles as nurses. Former Marietta Mayor Bill Dunaway, retired businessman and Strand supporter Steve Imler; and Andrew Cole, the Strand's event and bar manager round out the cast.
None of the cast members are being paid for their roles, and are devoting their time to the stage in hopes of raising money for the city's historic theater. Proceeds from the play will help pay off the $2 million loan that was taken out to resurrect the old theater on Marietta Square.
Show times are Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25. Call the Strand Box Office, 770-293-0080, or visit www.EarlSmithStrand.org
This will be too good a show to miss! What a great way to spend Friday evening on The Square!
