Um? ... Filing Your Nails at the Closing Table is probably not recommended Mrs Agent !?!?!?

By
Real Estate Agent with Bergen County, NJ - RE/MAX Real Estate Limited

Oh Boy!

You would think that in this market and economy, where every client is more valuable than ever, that every Realtor would be completely aware of their actions, so they dont give a bad impression right ??

Then why do I continue to hear from friends and associates that some Realtors are still acting in the most Bizarre ways ????

Last week I heard from a fellow Realtor that she was at a closing in the afternoon, and the Sellers Realtor was there and CLEARLY showed sign after sign that she just couldnt be bothered to be there. She was obviously only there to pick up her Commission Check !

Apparently she showed up late, chewing gum, complained that the transaction 'took so long' and that she was relieved that they were "Finally at the Closing Table" - then proceeded to sit down, chomp her gum and TAKE OUT HER NAIL FILE AND START FILING NAILS IN FRONT OF BOTH ATTORNEYS, THE OTHER REALTOR - AND BOTH SETS OF CLIENTS !!!!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME !!!!!

... not surprisingly, the Buyers Agent felt she was extremely unprofessional, and whats worse, her CLIENTS were left with an unprofessional impression of that agent !

I also had communication recently with an Agent who constantly *sighed* every time I called her to check in or ask a question (and I had a terrific Buyer for her listing). What was worse, was that she TWICE promised to find an answer and call me back, and never did.

... fortunately my buyers found a better home, and that Agent's listing is still available ...

This is not the time for lackluster impressions folks !

Honestly, filing your nails at a closing ????

I had a listing that sold and the selling broker did not show up for the closing.  Her customer is now my customer.  He contacted me about a year later and asked me to be his agent.  He knew how I worked my business and said he was impressed.

Sheldon, I remember a long while ago there was a rant on "best of craigslist" about filing nails on Amtrak Train. There was a line that went something like "And when something you just clipped off your thumb lands on my sleeve, you casually say Aw, sahwrry - that's still not OK!". Why on earth would you do that at a closing table...

Not the way I would want to be remembered, Sheldon!  Lots of people have different opinions about closing table etiquette - but certainly no one would think filing your nails is ok...well, except for one! :-)

This behavior is too bizarre for words.  How do they end up with listings?

Uh oh, those are some awful stories there. The agents were not thinking about the apearances of their behavior. Let's hope it was just an off day.

It takes all kinds to make the world go round but with this type of market even pretending to be a professional helps. Maybe she was supposed to be at her real job.

Maybe this is a leftover of the "houses practically sell themselves" era, when agents didn't have to "sell" so hard, Sheldon.  This is DEFINITELY NOT those times now.  Even if it was, why would you want THIS to be the impression anyone is left with?

I help brokers build businesses they love.

We need to teach table manners to carry agents through 4 hours closings. I listen to sports news on the way to closings that have a bunch of men so that I can make appropriately intelligent noises at the right times.

Nail filing? Awful.

Hi Sheldon,

That's pretty bad.  I think we all have to be aware of our environment.  If it's not appropriate then you shouldn't do it.

#22 ! Yup And they just dont get it !

BoB ! Isnt it bizarre ! I am watching my every move at all times !

Jon ! The whole 'sigh' thing is a major no-no. I hear you that some people dont do it intentionally, but perception is reality !

Chrissi ! So true - happens everywhere !

Ilyce ! I hope so ! The problem is that many of these people dont ever think it's their fault ! They dont think they did anything wrong ! ... Oh Well ! More clients for us !

Tailored service for your real estate needs!

And it's not only real estate professionals that forget how to behave.  Yesterday I had jury duty and was paneled for a murder trial.  The woman sitting next to me let out an INCREDIBLY LOUD belch and then said, "Glad it didn't come out the other end!"

I let out a GASP and the DA looked over at me, didn't even notice the lady with indigestion.
