Feelin' a little trashy lately?

As I started my morning walk this morning the Tallahassee air was a little cooler and dryer, just a hint of fall.  Quite nice.  Fall is a beautiful time of year in this part of the world and a great time for people to shop for new homes.

It was also trash collection day and as I walked by my neighbor's house, I noticed some extra beverage cans that I'm quite sure weren't their's lying next to the edge of the road.  So, good neighbor that I am, I picked them up, dropped them in the convenient recycle bin and continued my climb up the hill.

Another four cans, three bottles several candy wrappers & snack food containers later and I started to sense a trend.  Lucky for me the trash and recycle containers were on the street!  At first glance, you don't notice the trash that was lying around.  But if I was driving up to one of the homes on this street with a family on a house hunting tour, I would be embarrassed by all the trash!  And I live in a nice neighborhood where we take turns picking up the trash!

 trash pile with a face

When did it become acceptable to leave our garbage in someone else's backyard (public roads) for them to pickup?  It doesn't make any sense to me, because I'm fairly sure the people that forget their cans, bottles, etc., don't leave them lying around in their own front yards.  But I digress.

As Realtors, when showing property we all know how important it is that the listing property be in the best shape possible to get the best price and secure a sale.  The better the neighborhood looks also contributes to the outcome for the seller.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could find a way to raise the awareness of those who drop, throw, forget, don't realize, etc. etc, that they are trashing our roads and highways?

Which of us wants to be marketing properties along roads that look like this---?

When with some education, public awareness, and a little extra effort on everyone's part we could be marketing properties that look more like this!!!

 Have a great day!

Eva - Great post! Halifax Nova Scotia has in recent years taken the lead on recyling and has won some worldwide awards on our whole garbage/recycling systems. Still - You take a walk outin the country sometimes and come across little private dumps of building materials. It's a shame , but atleast it's much better than it used to be.

Thanks Paul.  Tallahassee is just this fall instituting a county-wide recycling program in all the schools.  What an effort that is turning out to be!  But hopefully it will also help raise awareness of the trash issue.  Every little bit helps!

Lo, these many decades ago (almost 6 - gasp!), my country-born-and-bred father informed me that it wasn't so bad to throw things out the car window in the city because the street-cleaners would clean it up, but never to do so in the country.  My city-born-and-bred mother informed me that it wasn't so bad to throw things out in the country because the animals would eat it, but never to do so in the city.

So I learned very early never to throw things out the car window ANYWHERE.  Very clever of them, I thought.

EVA - Great message and something that we all need to be aware of. It is not only our own backyards but those of others that we affect when we toss out trash. Michigan enacted a deposit on cans years ago -- in the 70's if my memory serves me (I'm sure Gary Smith will chime in and help with the facts!)

Since then we have seen water bottles, sports drinks, AND plastic bags from the supermarkets! etc that are not covered with deposits and we find those liettering our roadways and neighborhoods again. As much as a PITA it is to recycle the bottles, we have gotten in a habit of it here. Funny - when I go to neighboring states that don't require deposits I still find myself saving them! Good Idea and I love the pix! Where did the one with the sunglasses come from?

What a trashy post!  Good job - I see way too much trash lying around.  Some kids left their soft drink cup, cover and staw in our front lawn this weekend.  It is very unfortunate!  I think the adopt a highway projects are great -- perhpas we can start them in the neighborhoods.

Mary - thank you for you comments and the Gold Star!  Florida conservation and environmental organiations have tried for years - probably decades at this point, to get the deposit on beverages containers, but the beer and softdrink industries defeat it every time... they see it as increasing the cost of their products.... etc, etc...and on Mr. Trashy-- like a good resporter..I never reveal my sources!

Joan - In Florida we have the adopt a road-way program so that different companies, clubs, homeowners assns. can adopt a stretch of road - any publically owned road - by committing to keeping it clean of trash.  It is then posted with a standardized sign that has the name of the group on it.  Works pretty well but most groups pick the more heavily traveled roads rather than the neighborhood roads lined with homes. Thanks!

Great job of cleaning up after the piggies!!! I don't get it - why are people like that? A simple trash bag in the car would take care of everything -

Barbara-Jo & Bill- I'm with you!  it seems so simple!  In my part of the world, I c an't tell you the number of times I've seen trash fly out of the back of pick-up trucks... I don't think they realize when they through it back there that the winds of highway driving will lift it out of the bed of the truck and loose on the highway for others to pick up...even 45 and 50 mph can do it!  Thank you...
