I Forgot to Listen.

Like a juggler with fifteen pins in the air at once, we've all become masters of the multi-task. Is it fun?... well, no. Is it how the life of a busy Realtor has to be?... well, not necessarily.

We're all busy, I get that. We are also overwhelmed with distractions. All. Day. Long. Focus

Your email is interrupted by the office phone call, but you check that text as you're on the phone. Have you been there? I have! We read while we watch the game on TV, we talk on the phone when we're driving, we even think about other stuff as someone is talking directly to us.

What if we just.... didn't?

I tried this for a FULL DAY to see what "focus" really is like. In the car, I drove. No phone. No radio. No iPod. And guess what? I started noticing the environment. I was looking at other people in their cars (who were doing all the stuff that I was doing the day before).

I became in tune with my task.

Did I have messages, texts and emails waiting for me at my destination? Yup. But you know what?... I never got the call from President Obama asking if he should launch a nuclear strike or Phil Jackson asking what play he should run at the last minute to win the Laker game.

Next, I looked at my calendar and made some calls. And I LISTENED to them with all my might. I shared and talked and laughed. Maybe even picked up a lead or two and maybe a friend. But I was NOT checking email while they were ranting or texting my buddy while they were telling me about their family.

It's amazing what you HEAR when you LISTEN.

Our busy lifestyle is a habit hard to break, and yes, things need to get done. But once or twice a month, I can practice this and maybe become a student of a new way of communicating.

So here is my challenge: Next week pick ONE DAY and try it out! Make a commitment to focus on ONE THING at a time all day long and see if you are 1) more focused, 2) get MORE work done, 3) feel less stressed.

Have you ever tried it? Think it's impossible? Worth a shot? Let me know your story!

Hi Jay,  Couldn't agree more.  I've tried your idea only just for a small portion of the day.  I found that I constantly fought my own efforts to focus on one thing and ignore all the outside distractions.  Not as easy as it sounds !

Agree, Agree, Agree!!!  And Bill, you are correct - it is not as easy as it sounds!  Especially for those of us that are just "born that way".  Now that I have thought about it, I realize that I have always been a multi-tasker, even before this magical electronic age!!  While on the phone (when it had a wire, and was attached to the wall), I was always doing something else in addition - cleaning out a drawer, washing down the kitchen cabinets...always something. Now I ask myself, why did I feel that having a conversation with a friend was wasting time???  Wow - eye opener!  Time to re-think my time management. Thanks for the wake-up-call, Jay!

Hey Jay O'Brien !

I like the way of your communicating but you know the way you are telling to lead the day is like leaving the work for the next time .But we cannot do that everytime or may be even onetime in America as a businessman or real state businessman whatever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Though you can have a chance to do that when you are free or there is someone else to do half or your work to reduce the workload and allow more time to give to focus on a single job at a time ................................................

I drive at least 45 minutes each way to and from work.  At least half the time I'm music free, don't answer calls, no nothing.  It's great medication time.

After reading this I'm going to make more of an effort to not grab my phone at every little ding.  I do sometimes check to see what an email is when I'm with someone else, but 98% of the time it could totally wait.

One day at a time, right?!? Small doses will lead to big change!

Bill, Karen and Joelle: Totally right... NOT as easy as it sounds! Try it, though!!

Mike: Maybe this is a good way to see that we should hire an assistant to ENJOY and LIVE life, not be running all day long like a crazy person! This is just an exercise for self-evaluation.

Christina: Please Blog your esperience! GREAT IDEA! I encourage everyone to do that and let's see what happens!

Jay, I do the car in silence.  Every day!  I have to have that time to refresh so I can handle the onslaught of no time management the rest of the day.  You raise a great point though...what are we missing because we aren't focusing?  I am sure it is more than we need to be.
