PROJECT BACKGROUND
The goal of this project is to help complete the City's section of the Coachella Valley Regional Bikeway and to create a safe and convenient route for commuter and recreational bicyclists traveling to and from work and school.
Cathedral City has identified multiple bikeway projects which are included in CVAG's Non-motorized Transportation Plan. Within the City, there is a six mile Class I regional bike path and 15 Class II facilities. To date two miles of the six mile Class I segment have been constructed. The Phase 1 Whitewater Channel Bike Trail will be the third mile of this segment.
This Class I Bike Path will provide a safe facility for the path users that that are currently using busy streets like Landau. Phase 1 will design and construct approximately one mile of Class 1 bike path along the east side of the Whitewater Channel, and will also include about 3000 feet of Class 2 bike lanes along 30th Avenue. Class 1 and 2 are Caltrans designations for bicycle facilities.
A Class 1 facility is a separated from motor vehicles. Most Class 1 bikeways are paved facilities with two way travel. Class 2 bikeways are striped bike lanes on the outside of a city street or highway.
BENEFITS
The project will benefit bicycle commuters and recreational riders by providing a safe, more direct route to schools and other destinations. It will also connect to the regional bikeway networks.
FUTURE PHASES
Future phases will continue to construct the trail to the south. Phase 2 will construct approximately 6,000 lf of Class 1 trail along the east side of the Whitewater River from 30th Avenue to East Ramon Road. Phase 3 will continue the Class 1 Bike Trail along the east side of the Whitewater River from East Ramon Road to Dinah Shore Drive.
