"Help publicly. Help privately. Help in your actions by recycling and conserving and protecting, but help also in your attitude. Help make sense where sense has gone missing. Help bring reason and respect to discourse and debate. Help science to solve and faith to soothe. Help law bring justice, until justice is commonplace. Help and you will abolish apathy - the void that is so quickly filled by ignorance and evil." Tom Hanks, Actor
One of the troubles with quoting the famous and glamorous will be the tendency of some to think ... "I could never do that become I'm just me" or others to tend to not take "them" seriously. Alas, sometimes when we "heroize" folks, we take away from them the ability to reach out to us ... the pedestal we've placed them on is too tall!
If we find ourselves in either of those conditions ... perhaps we might take another moment to really look at what Mr. Hanks has provided as encouragement to us as a profession and more directly to each of us as individuals. Often the work of the professionals in the real estate industry goes unnoticed ... not because it lacks importance ... but we find ourselves in modesty motivated circumstances. We're afraid to "blow our own horns" least somehow criticize our efforts as self-serving or base.
Years ago, someone told me "the best sermon that I will ever hear is the one that I see being done." We can model our giving natures in work in our communities; we can model our desire for justice for our now and future clients by protesting at injustice in the housing marketplace; we can model our concern for the environment by actively participating and promoting recycling programs.
We do not have to be among the "rich and famous" to make a difference ... but we do have to be among the willing!
