Annapolis Views - The U.S. Naval Academy Bridge

Rarely-seen view of the Naval Academy Bridge

This is one of many "rarely-seen" views of the Annapolis area that I've photographed from the U.S. Naval Academy grounds.  I say that because access to the USNA "yard" is restricted and not everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the marvelous photo opportunities on and from there.  As a military spouse,, I do have that privilege and never tire of the beautiful views, grounds, and buildings.

I noticed this view of the U.S. Naval Academy Bridge as I walked to my car from the pharmacy yesterday and it occurred to me that anyone relocating to the area might enjoy a series of Annapolis photos taken from a different angle than they usually find online.

Naval Academy Bridge

In the following photo of the U.S. Naval Academy Bridge, we see the Blue Angels overhead in their annual performance during Commissioning Week at the Academy.  (CREDIT:  U.S. Naval Academy, with permission.)  This was taken from the field you see between the cars and the Severn River in the first photo.

The U.S. Naval Academy Bridge is located on Route 450 headed Northeast between Annapolis and Rt. 50 en route to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.  It's adjacent to the USNA, not on the grounds, and its a public thoroughfare with a beautiful view of the Severn and the USNA.  The bridge you see here replaced a working drawbridge which had been the main access to the Academy from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Baltimore at one time.

The new bridge was built in 1994 - perfect timing for re-naming it the U.S. Naval Academy Bridge in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Navy's premier higher education institution.  I suspect it still satisfies the nick-name some Midshipmen (students) have given it over the years, however... the "Oh shit" bridge, indicating the state of their nerves crossing the bridge en route to the USNA for the first day of Plebe Summer.

Today, this bridge is the shortcut enabling locals to get from Arnold and Severna Park to Annapolis without having to use Rt. 50, which can be a bottleneck on weekends during beach season.  In fact, it's also a shortcut for locals to avoid the Severn River Bridge traveling from Crofton, Riva, and Annapolis to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.  That comes in handy whenever there's construction or an accident on that stretch of the road.

While there's loads of information online about the U.S. Naval Academy Bridge, I suspect it's that last paragraph which newcomers to the area will find most helpful as they learn their way around Annapolis.

If you're relocating to the Annapolis area, I hope you'll think of me when you're ready to start looking at homes and communities.  We moved to the area when my husband got PCS orders to the USNA as an instructor after four years of sea-duty out of San Diego.  What a great opportunity that was for us, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the Annapolis area, too.

I think I ran over that bridge about 10 years ago with a cousin who lives in Maryland. Some 5 mile run. A beautiful run it was. Thanks for the picture and the memory, Margaret.

Margaret, very interesting information about the Naval Academy, the new bridge, and great information about all the local traffic tips for your readers!  I have never been there, but it is always a destination I would like to see.  Is it completely restricted now because of 9/11?

Patrick, Glad you found it interesting.

Glenn, It's amazing how that happens, isn't it.  You see a picture, here the name of a place you've been, and it brings back good memories.  Maybe that's why I love the USNA so much, because Larry was stationed there when our two boys were toddlers and it was a wonderful time in our lives.

Bruce - This started out as one of those "silent Sunday" posts with the photo, but then I decided "So what?"  Well, it's a great way to avoid some traffic on Rt. 50, and newcomers to the area might like to know that.  LOL.

Ah Yes! I must return for a visit.

When the vacation fund in replenished, we both said we want to do a trip to DC...one hour in January was hardly a visit!

Hi Margaret, A wonderful photo story. I have been to the USNA a couple times because I had a close friend graduate from there. The grounds are so stunning and the pride one feels when experiencing it. Seeing the cadets on parade is so awesome and even when not on parade they drill these marches daily all over the grounds. One of my memories was walking up that giant hill of a commercial street nearby. It rivals those I have experienced in San Francisco. I can hear in your voice your love and excitement of your visits  there even for the more mundane commissary visits.

You're right, William.  While my husband didn't attend the USNA, he did teach there and I still enjoy any excuse to visit there.

HI Margaret...It's good to get a first hand look inside the USNA.  While there as a teenager, we took the dreaded trip across that rickety bridge.  Nice to know it's been replaced.  I've recently began blogging on the Citadel Parades that are held every Friday afternoon.   Between you and I, we have our military schools on the east coast covered !

Margaret - great shot!  I've only seen the bridge from the other side while traveling through the area.  Love your "real" views of the area.

Joye - I know little about the Citadel, although we visited there a few times when we lived in Charleston.  I'm headed over to your blog to subscribe.  We lived in Kings Grant when it was brand new, and our home overlooked the 9th fairway of the golf course with the Ashley River beyond.  It was a beautiful view.  Is it true that golf course is closed now?

Penny - I probably have enough to post one a week for a year, and then I'll have to figure out something else.  LOL. So much has been said by so many people about Annapolis, it's not easy to find a new and interesting topic.

Margaret--What a nice localism post!  You took something so simple and turned it into such good information for those relocating or even the locals!  Great reminder to keep our eyes and ears open at all times!

Pat, thank you!  Activerain has really changed how I look at things.  I drove through that place to pick up prescriptions for the past 30 years without taking an photos.  Now, with the iPhone, I find myself taking photos all the time.

Frank, Annapolis is a beautiful city and the USNA is a huge bonus.  Maybe when you're in the area, you can let us know and we'll try to pull together some Activerainers for a coffee or a beer or ??

Margaret, Don't know HOW I managed to miss this the first go round!  That old bridge was definitely in need of replacement, and I've heard they've really restricted access to USNA grounds since 9/11.  There are so many beautiful photo opportunities on campus, they've always done a fantastic job of keeping the place as beautiful as can be done.  Thanks for refreshing some memories for me!  Bill

Bill, I don't know if it's possible to get on the Yard without military ID... I guess at the main gate.  'Hoping to invite some folks to town to watch a Brigade of Mishipmen Dress Parade.  Do you want me to send you the date, just in case?

Margaret, Hmmm...I think I've got plenty of memories of those...sweating in those blues, holding out that heavy rifle wondering when the song would end!!!  I do want to go tour the grounds again at some point, just not sure when I'll make it back.  Seems most times when I've visiting my inlaws the time opportunities are scant.
