I don't suppose many of us like to think about a cemetery. It does not bring up the fondest of memories. But they too, have a part in our history. I've never toured the grounds in New Orleans, but due to the city being below sea level, everything is a tomb, and many are quite an architectural sight.
So, this morning, I was scanning the New York Times on line, and ran across a story about cemeteries that have survived (and rightly so) the urban sprawl. But only to end up in the strangest of places. Most, are in the middle of parking lots....surrounded by acres of pavement for the Walmart or Home Depot....
On one of those crazy Internet "road trips" we can take by clicking on a link (note to self...don't do that to readers of your blog, lest you leave a trail of bread crumbs so the return back....) I found myself off on another site, RoadsideResort.com and an article about cemetaries in parking lots. Who knew???
But even more amazing to me was the one I discovered in my own back yard (no, not in MY back yard...but in Atlanta....silly you!)
It's located in Decatur, and is referenced in both the RoadsideResort post as well as another post by Karen Griffen Dean. Amazing story about a developer that needed to grade the land for a parking lot, so the cemetery was left "up in the air" and what appears to be quite a detail stone wall supporting it was built. I'll let you click through on the link to read about it as well.
Just one of those Sunday morning Internet "road trips" that lead me to an interesting discovery.
Perhaps you all might want to share a discovery YOU found on an IRT (Internet Road Trip)?
