According to a report from the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council, South Dakota leads the nation in its climate for small business. The report cites as reasons for the top ranking, no personal or corporate income or capital gains taxes, lowest crime rate, and low state and local government spending. Congratulations to South Dakota.
Minnesota follows closely behind, just forty-one spots below South Dakota and for reasons similar but mostly opposite. This illustrates just how off target Minnesota is in its attempts to solve its budget problems. Minnesota is a great place to do business with many facilities that far exceed South Dakota. We have a large, educated work force and a transportation hub that is the envy of many other states. We have only one serious fault. It's just too expensive to seriously consider Minnesota as a place to move the company.
Our state government leaders continue to fail to understand that the only way out of debt is to increase revenue. You don't do that by driving it away. Minnesota needs more business, and you don't get more business by raising your prices or cutting services.
Our past and current legislators will no doubt continue the tradition of sitting in their designated chambers, doing little other than shooting spitballs across the aisle at their political counterparts. They will stagnate until it's time to go to the cabin to put the dock in the water, when they will slop together some legislation designed to delay any substantive change until next year.
The governor will cheer lead for his side, and he will attend the fishing opener. This term, we will switch from the non-productive position of a governor whose only proposed solution is to cut spending, to another non-productive position of a new governor whose only proposed solution is to increase taxes. Less filling!! --- Tastes great!!!
