Ever feel like just taking a drive or doing a little country exploration?
Here's a great one - travel west to The Ironwood Forest - Things to Do Near Tucson
I took a little drive out west last week for a bit of R and R - and the Ironwood Forest - National Monument is a great place to get away from it all!
You can follow Silverbell out to find it - perhaps your most direct route would be to take the Marana Road Exit going north out of Tucson on I-10. Then, head west. The road west is called Marana Road, or Trico Marana Road, and it eventually intersects with Silverbell. (It takes about 20 minutes)
All in all, from the Circle K to pavement end, it was just under 16 miles west. After that, the road gets progressively worse, and isn't the best for a luxury vehicle such as I drove my first time through, coming out near Picacho Peak.
This time I had pity on my car, and just went a mile or so beyond the concrete.
The mountains help you keep your bearing. You can drive and drive and think you've left civilization behind, but then you get a little surprise.
But don't ask the cactus for directions!! They can be a little overwhelming!
Some are quite indecisive --
Others get all up in arms
Others give you NOT such a nice suggestion
And still others get positively prickly!
Some are no help at all!
So take my advice, and stick to yourself, and just watch out for...
And in the summer, these...
It's a beautiful drive to The Ironwood Forest - National Monument. A couple of rejuvenating hours in the outskirts of Tucson, AZ.
With a lovely view of Marana and Tucson behind:
