Hood River School District Budget Crisis
Tonight, January 24th, brought the third Hood River County School District public budget forum, this time in Cascade Locks. Closure of the Cascade Locks school is one of the options being discussed to make up for some of the Hood River County School District budget shortfall. Through the forum process it has become apparent that there are no easy answers and every option will mean sacrifice for everyone.
At last Thursday's forum, I first heard about the Hood River County Education Foundation (HRCEF.org). The current options for solving budget problems are really little more than bandaids and don't solve the basic problem: there is not enough money to fund the Hood River County School District with adequate personnel, school sports, special programs, supplies and other resources. Hood River County Education Foundation is a community group made up of parents and school district staff whose mission is to find long-term solutions to school issues, including fundraising and investing. Our community is rich in passion, education and experience... surely, this group of hundreds can help find solutions to this budget crisis worthy of our childrens future. Hood River County Education Foundation operates independently of the Hood River County School District.
