"Farmer Veteran Coalition" Helps Veteran Soldiers

I recently read in an organic gardening magazine about a nonprofit program called "Farmer-Veteran Coalition "FVC)".  Many soldiers returning home from overseas are finding the economic conditions difficult and with a shortage of young farmers in America today, it appears that these veterans are a natural for working on farms and even starting their own. Soldiers have a lot of potential skills and knowledge that can benefit the agricultural community. There has been a huge increase in new small farms in recent years and in the number of gardeners now growing their own food in their own back yards, even on rooftops in large cities like New York City.

We are avid gardeners and love growing our own food. I also take great pride in the fact that my father(and all his brothers) was a WWII veteran and former POW. My late husband was a Vietnam veteran and died at 50 years old from the side effects of agent orange. My nephew is in the Air Force and has been on multiple tours of duty, and on his way back, to Afghanistan, Kuwait, Turkey and some I can't even remember.

So when I read this it really peaked my interest and I wanted to pass it along. Maybe you know someone that could benefit from such a wonderful program. American veterans working the American soil, starting their own farms to raise their families on, maybe pass on to their children. What a great idea!

This sounds like a great program for returning military folks needing to find a vocation.  My hubby passed away in October very unexpectedly at age 82.  As a veteran of the Korean war he/we were/are  very supportive of the military.  He grew up in Wisconsin and loved gardening.  We always had the most wonderful tomatoes, green peppers, cabbages, radishes and onions.  He loved sharing them in the community.

We lived in Shannondale/Charles Town for 12 years and of course visited Martinsburg for shopping, eating, etc.  We moved here in 1994 but I have visited every year since and the growth and changes are always so interesting and plentiful!  It's a beautiful area.

Yes it is beautiful here, I have been here since 1980. I have spent many hours in Shannondale in the past selling property, not so much lately though. We have a lot of people moving from here to NC and SC. There are a lot of good things happening here now, it is growing fast.
