A big question that I hear is, "Do I need to speak Spanish if I move to Mexico?"
The answer is "No, But..."
There are many areas in Mexico where tourism is so strong that you can find locals everywhere who are fluent in English. This would include areas such as Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Penasco, etc.
Other areas have so many US and Canadian citizens that it really isn't necessary to speak Spanish to get along. This would include area such as San Miguel de Allende, Lake Chapala, Ajijic, etc.
And then there are many areas where it is difficult if you don't know some everyday Spanish. This would include the areas where you find only a few or no ex-patriots, especially small towns.
Of course, no matter where you are, it is better if you speak at least some Spanish. It makes life much easier and it is especially rewarding to see how much it means to the local citizens. They love it when you speak the language, even if it is pretty broken and with a horrible accent.
Spanish is regarded as an easy language to learn and you should be able to pick up enough words to have fun quite rapidly.
