Dear Real Estate: I Don't Love You Anymore

Do you remember your first time?

Look, Real Estate: I had a life before you. It was a GOOD life. A secure one. I had my paycheck and I was playing the field, not tied to anyone and it was nice.

I could come and go, hang out with my clients and not worry about getting home on time because I knew that money would be waiting for me, like that soft arm chair that I love to nap in on the weekends.

Young LoveYou've got to admit: Things have gotten monotonous and ritualistic. It's like we're just going through the motions. I miss the passion from when we were first together.

I took a chance on you. I had a good gig... stable, predictable. But I saw others having these seemingly hot affairs with a Stranger. Some would just dabble in it, but often that would lead to a full-on divorce from The Man and a hot pursuit of this new, fun Stranger.

And then you tempted me away with your sexy attitude and lofty promises. You told me we'd make this work and I believed you. That affair was strange at first, but new and fresh and just what I needed. I'll never forget that.

We didn't have anything there at the beginning, but we had EACH OTHER, and that's all that mattered. Every little thing was SO EXCITING! Buyers would come and go but then we found THE ONE. "Wow, this could turn into something." We saw things that we never knew existed out there, and the best part was that we were learning together. Making mistakes together. Relying on each other. Exhilarating!

Then it happened. Together we found it. THE thing that would forever bind us forever with THEM. The perfect one.

Her long dark roof. Her perfectly accented shutters. Stairs that go all the way to the ground. Oh yeah.

In an excited frenzy, we drew up the necessary papers and took it before the right people to sign them and make this something that would last the ages! We were facilitating the ULTIMATE dream, which would begin this new life of independence for us (yet relying on others to make it happen). Weird but pretty darn fun.

We had passion. We served them with fervor. We went above and beyond in EVERY aspect, because that is what pleased them. It made US happy to bring such pleasure to them. We even did the extra things, which now seem like so much work and are often just brushed aside.

What happened to that passion? Yeah, Real Estate, I still LOVE you but the LUST is sometimes hard to get back. I mean, look what you put us through over the last couple years. You expect me to be all warm and fuzzy after you act like that?

OK... the counseling has worked. We have both learned a lot and are ready to put this behind us and rekindle that flame. I remember what it was like and I'm ready to do my part to get us back there.

I'm ready for this next deal to be just like our first one together.

I remember our first deal, a relatively small sale, but pretty smooth. At that point, we used to take any lead, but we are so much more selective now. This business can wear you out so I do find it helpful to get re-engaged every so often with a good seminar of even a book. I just read "Selling Luxury Homes" by Jack Cotton and it gave me some great new ideas that we can use in our business. We are also a part of a luxury home group within our office and find networking with like-minded agents can be very rewarding mentally. Thanks for the post.

The first deal, what a time.  How in the world did I get thru it.  Buyer was referred to me and he shows up with cash in a bag, I kid you not, $35K in cash in a bag!  He worked in lawn care and was used to dealing in cash.  He had picked the house out already, and I thought, wow, I can do this.  That was truely the only easy deal I have ever had.

Great writing, Jay! My first was a haughty, naughty FSBO I brazenly door-knocked. Strange, how unafraid I was, it just seemed right to me. A long courtship while I proved my worth.. a touch of tenderness in knowing it was my first time... Ahhh, great memory. Thanks!

Jay - Oh yes, I remember my first time, actually it was the first time for both of us and like the virgins we were, we were nervouse and yet excited too.  We fumbled around at first making the innocent mistakes that the unexperienced make but nothing major that we didn't laugh about after a moment.  Before we knew it, it was over and we both just kind of stood there and said, "wow, we're not virgins anymore".  :)
