I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!
(from My Country by Dorothea Mackellar)
January 26 (tomorrow here, now in Oz) is Australia Day.
I may be expected to become a little maudlin, and, perhaps, a little sentimental (just for the day, mind you.) for my native country.
I am more than happy with my choice to live in Utah. From these snowy heights, I can recall Australia Day celebrations for 60 years of my life. Now in Australian it is blazing summer - a time for beaches, parties and International Cricket matches. This year a major portion of the eastern part of Australia is getting over disastrous flooding. The will of the people and traditional mateship, as ever, will pull them through.
My wife is a little amused that I have an Australia flag ready for our front yard for my own celebration tomorrow. Have a coldie with me.
