Are you a full time agent?

By
Real Estate Agent with CB Valley Broker

I get this question from time to time in listing presentations and I always have to think a bit. What really is full time compared with part time in this line of work?

First, no, I do not have a second job. Maybe that settles it. But: I do work from home a lot, I do not have fixed office times, I do meet friends for a cup of coffee on weekday mornings...

So the answer is a bit difficult, I think, because it is not an office job that clearly defines 9-5. We work when our work is requested. That could be Sunday morning or Wed afternoon or Friday night. It can also be that after 6 weeks of Open Houses and between new listings we care for kids and property on a Thursday.

Real Estate Brokering is a highly demanding, entrepreneurial endeavor. It is also in my opinion the most flexible and enjoyable work on earth. So do not ask if your broker is a full time broker. Ask if she or he is there for you and in my case I would answer "anytime"!

I think that full time means that it is your first priority (after your family) and that you are available to your clients when they need you.  You hit the nail on the head!

I agree,  I think it is important to be out in the community marketing yourself also.  You can't do that from within your office.  I always have my phone on - forward to cell and I always call everyone back quickly so I don't think I work part-time.  I think a part time person is one who has another job.

I think a full time agent means that you work hard at your business and this is your JOB. Good post.

Annette,

I agree with Pamela.

But I also think they want to know if you are part time because maybe their last Realtor was and they never heard from them after it got listed. I hear this complaint all the time.  I know then that I can meet their expectations by giving them regular feedback.

Pamela, thanks, I agree, priority is a good definition

Jane, yep, "reachability" is paramount!

Shannon, agreed, engagement and hard work is what is needed, regardless of the hours

Bob, thanks, so right, times when my dog could sell RE are over, we need to WORK!

Annette, it's a difficult item to reach consensus on, and I think if you are available to fully work the expectations you have set with your clients, it's all good..

I think effective time management is the key as you mentioned.  Even part time agents who may have another job and are partnered with and work with other great agents to assist with managing their business can be highly effective.
