Basic Video How To

By

Todays' quick post is a short lesson plan... I am teaching the class on how to shoot a video, and someone may just find these notes useful.

First - decide the purpose of the video, is it a home preview, and agent intro, client testimonial, or something entirely different?

Most place will have you work on some sequencing, and we will get to that - first - lets make sure you have the equipment needed...

A camera of some sort will come in handy - don't worry about what it is to start, just getting the film rolling is the first point.

Second, I highly recommend a tripod, again - of some sort... that said, I don't drag out a 50# engineering tripod for a home movie... So, a small handy tripod, or something a little bigger will be fine - think $100 (and many are $20) or less rather than $500 or more... :-)

Bounce... If you are seated and have the option, use a bounce, this is for lighting, and it is about as basic as it gets... a large poster board or a flip out car shade will work.

You will also need a script..

So far so good?

Ok, lets figure out what we are working on. As I am assuming you are new to this, we will start with an agent intro... That is simply, and you don't have to move the camera...

Start with a scrip - "Hi, I'm Terkel Sorensen..." that was easy - or maybe not, if you have a hard time, take notes when you watch your favorite infomercial... Why? Infomercials are made to appeal to the audience, hence, the language is probably not that far from what you might use.

Next, a location, be it your favorite chair, coffee house or office - anything goes.

Setup a camera, and shoot a test, look at the light and how you are framed. Have your head close to the top, 2/3 to one or the other side, looking into the space. Again, watch a Barbara Walters interview and see how the subject is situated.

Again, look at the frame, how is your light, is there a window blowing out next to you? Do you need to move or use that handy bounce?

Now, once you have your shot setup, laearn your script, or print it in big type, and get someone to hold it right by the camera for you, it will look like you are looking at the camera, and you don't have to look down to read... It gives the impression taht you came prepared...

Ok, you shot the video. I recommend getting some eyeballs on it, my wife has good eyes for this, so I get a healthy does of criticism there, and it helps a lot.

Once you are happy, upload to youtube or your favorite video platform.

Now go viral.
