I've Been Robbed...On My Birthday! 3 Important Lessons Learned

Have you ever been a victim of a burglary?

Until today - my 34th birthday (whomp, whaaaaa) - I had not.

The worst part? It was my fault.

Someone had stolen my GPS and my son's PSP out of my car. Notice I didn't say they "broke in" to my car. No, that would imply that the car was locked. And it wasn't. Boo!

The kicker is that my car was IN MY DRIVEWAY. IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. I feel violated. I can't imagine how people must feel to have suffered a home burglary. We're lucky, really. We're out maybe $250 in "stuff".

On the bright side, my son said it probably happened "because I am famous...for being on the cover a magazine". Ah, nine-year olds and their unintended flattery. Yes... how could I forgot my large following of stalkers and groupies!?

Lessons learned:

1. Lock your car - all the time.
2. Take valuables out of your car - all the time.
3. (according to my son) Try not to be so successful because then you'll have people want to take your stuff - ALL the time. :)

Hi Kim, I am sorry that this has happened to you and it is a feeling of violation.  I once had a new car stolen when I lived in Miami, Florida and it was a terrible feeling.  It is too bad that you can't park your car in your own driveway without locking it.  Try to relax and enjoy your birthday...Happy Birthday!

Kim, My office got hit three times last year......sucks.

5,000 in damage and just a ton of nasty feelings. Now I find myself changing the tv channel all the time just to look at the cameras at my office ten miles away.

This economy hasn't helped matters.

Very unfortunate, Kim...  and you are NOT alone... We so want to think that we live in a "safe" neighborhood, and this stuff won't happen where we are....but we need to create some of our own safety by taking the appropriate precautions...better "safe" than sorry....

That sucks. My daughter called me this morning to tell me her 2 weeks old iPhone was stolen at school!

When they are in your own area it makes you feel very violated.

Sounds like your son might just have a budding career in law enforcement or "mom's" personal body guard. I must be tough being so famous. :)

My office was broken into 8 years ago and I still remember the feeling of being violated. We like to think people are all good and honest but the facts are, some aren't. The trick is not allowing the bad things bad folks do change our perceptions in general. We just need to be more aware and cautious. DJ

Kim, so sorry to hear that. Cars parked in driveways should not be an easy target - many leave their cars unlocked in our area with the keys inside. But I'm in a pretty rural area, not a subdivision.

Thank goodness there wasn't a garage remote they could have found or even worse found and the interior garage door was open... we are all guilty of this Kim & I'm sorry it happened on your birthday.  But there are good and valuable lessons here. Thank you for sharing! Happy Birthday too!

Kim - I have had my vehicles broken into several times. I have learned to no longer put very high end add ons to my vehicles. I have a habit of locking them all the time and putting things in the trunk. Hope your insurance covers your losses.
