Known around Tucson as simply "the gem show" it has grown so much over the years. A little history:
The Tucson Gem & Mineral Show started in 1955 as a free exhibition at a local elementary school. The next year, it moved to the Pima County Fair and Rodeo Grounds on South SixthAvenue, where it stayed until 1972. It eventually moved to the Tucson Convention Center Arena, with gem tents all over downtown Tucson and stretching miles down I-10 in various hotels.
The gem show is a series of shows with 250 retailers, that spans the Tucson metro area, most events open Saturday, January 29th and goes until February 13th. A part of the events includes a silent auction dinner night and lecutures and presentations.
For kids this year, there is a "mineral treasure hunt", a junior education area sponsored by the UA Earth Science Center and a special tour for kids on February 11th.
