Long Distance calling....is it Junk, or a Potential Client?

The economy has hit everyone, and we all get those unwanted sales calls daily.     They are from lenders, SEO companies promising to get us all on Page One (never knew page one was THAT large...) and also from web site companies trying to get our business.

So, when the cell rings, and caller ID says LONG DISTANCE, do you answer, or let it go to voice mail (IF they leave a message)?      When I do get those "junk" calls, I usually save them in my phone as such, so next time I KNOW not to answer.     But, today I got a call from Nebraska, and GOOD THING I did answer, someone wanted real estate information!

This potential buyer found me on the Internet, and had called many numbers, and I was the first to actually answer!    He wanted information on buying property here in Denver!      How many do we miss by thinking it will be a sales call?       That got me thinking today --- I probably should ALWAYS answer, because we can always hang up!

Will, I don't answer when with clients either, but when I see a repeated number that I KNOW is solicitation, I do not answer!

Chris, you are right with some numbers --- SEO or web site solicitation!   I have one company call at least once a week, and have told them many times I am SO not interested!

I dislike answering seattle area numbers - seems like those are the junk these days, LOL!  It depends on what I am doing if I will take the call or not.  I definitely will not interrupt a phone call or an appointment for an unknown non-emergent call.

I always answer. Even if it is a sales call, those people are simply trying to make a living like we all are and, according to a telemarketing friend of mine, they do get credit for working, i.e., for staying on line for a certain amount of time (apparently the odds of them making a sale go up the longer they talk with you) or making so many calls in a day.

Joan--I too had grown weary of trying to fight off sales people who will not give up---I am just too nice and rarely hang up on anyone.  But recently I have been answering the calls and as you experienced, many of these calls are legitimate!  So I agree, pick up the phone!!

Joan, We answer the long distance calls because many of our buyers are looking to relocate back to Long Island. "Junk calls" come locally too.

Joan, I typically don't answer any calls from "junk call center locations" such as Nebraska (lucky you to speak with a "real" person from there!) but always listen to voicemails to return any legitimate calls ASAP. :)

Joan - I agree, maybe it's worth risking a sales call when there's a chance it could be a potential client! I may just start answering my phone more often as I too ignore it unless it's someone I now. Food for thought anyway.

Renee, funny you should say that --- I get one from 503 almost daily, and must be a robo caller, as IF I answer, no one answers for a while.    Just looked, and it is from Oregon.

Oh Joan, My New Years resolution is to let it go to voicemail. I'm tired of talking to all the solicitors and wasting the minutes on my phone plan. If they just took "no" for an answer it wouldn't be such a problem. You had a very fortunate experience and I could see how it would change your mind but my thought is that if they need immediate gratification, I'll just have to give that one up.

Robin, I have already gotten 3 junk calls, and JUST noon on Monday.     In real estate, usually the last day of the month is really busy for us, and think it is just rude to call that much for cold calling!
