Wear The Right Shoes!

Snow DayI was just listening to the news. So far this January, we have recorded 41″ of snow in Rhode Island!  There may still be more to come, but apparently we had more in 1992!

The snow, however, hasn’t stopped me from doing inspections. Yes, there are things I can’t do – walking on roofs, seeing all of the foundation, seeing the grade of the landscaping, etc. But, I do walk around the house no matter how deep the snow!

What I don’t understand is the client who shows up in loafers and still wants to walk around the house!! I appreciate their fortitude, but just don’t get their planning! I have a shovel with me and a lot of times I will shovel a walkway to gain access and make it easier for all parties. Did they expect the yard to be shoveled?

Hi Hank~  It's bad enough that the walk ways aren't shoveled! I don't know what people are thinking sometimes.   Great planning on your part!  That is a lot of snow!

Living in Southern California we just don't understand snow.  I would probably show up in loafers too.

Vickie - Gotta love snow! Just not this much!

Ronald - And if I was in California, I would show up in Sandals! Just kidding!

In the winter I have 2 pairs of snow shoes in my vehicle, so if necessary I can tramp arround the yard and property to see as much of the house as possible. The second pair is for the occasional client who is willing to accompany me. That is something I encourage. Once a thoughtfull home seller had fired up his snowblower before the inspection and cleared a pathway arround the house. Once. So don't count on it.

Fortunately, I don't need snow shoes, but carry several types.  I normally wear boots with good tread, good for the yard and the roof, but I also carry tennis shoes, bedroom slippes, and rubber boots for crawl spaces and other wet places.  Just never know what you're going to need.

I don't carry extra shoes for the client, though I do have extra knee pads and gloves for those adventurous enough!

Hey, Hank – You’re missing out on the love affair between Google and our ActiveRain blogs. There’s lots of money to be made with blogging, especially as a home inspector.
