Whew.....it appears the Margaret Pope house, Searcy Arkansas, lives on.

The Margaret Pope house in Searcy Arkansas is on Market Street and we drive by it all the time.  It looked like this for a long time.

One day I drove by and did a double-take as I saw big construction happening.....or deconstruction possibly.

The work went on and on and on.  Stucco came off the front.  The house got leveled.  And I kept worrying because I thought I'd drive by and the house would be smashed.  Now, however, it looks like this.

And curtains have gone up.  People have vehicles parked in the yard.  I believe it is now inhabited again!  And they really made it look pretty, didn't they?

Hello Barbara, Congratulations to Searcy. It is worth while to preserve a historic charmer. What a great looking house.

I hope you are doing well.

Charles, it was interesting to watch.  I read an interesting article about your Eureka Springs.  It made me think of you.

They did a nice job on this house.  The front entrance looks so warm and inviting.  It makes you think of welcome wagon or holiday dinners.

I drove by it Monday and was THRILLED to see how it's shaped up.  Sort of disappointed they didn't keep the screened in porch on it, but hey, this IS Arkansas and it seems to get hotter each year.  Doubt if they would have done much sitting out there and reading, as Margaret Pope did!

To whomever bought and restored it, I applaud them and wish they might hold an open house!  I'd love to go thru it. Think you might get us Searcy Sleuths an invitation for a tour?  Use your influence, Barbara....(as a member emeritus of the Jr. Auxillary, if none else)....

A previous blog (10/16/2009) talks about this house and Margaret Pope. Read the interesting story from Billy Fuller. Bob Fuller never told any stories about his cousin Margaret even after a build up by Anita. Why didn't you post his stories, Anita?

Barbara, you did yourself proud with the sequence of pictures of the Pope house undergoing renovations.

Don, thanks for bringing up that old blog.  I read it and must admit it was one of my favorite ones.  I must admit also that right now I have a shoulder ache because my head has expanded to be too large for my shoulders to hold up due to the compliment you paid me on my blog!!!

It does look lovely, but it doesn't look like an old house anymore (from the front anyway).  I wish they'd replaced the stucco rather than going up with siding.

Angela, as I watched them during my drive-by each day, I think they had to destroy the stucco in order to level the floors.  The stucco came off a little more and more each day.  I remember the lady who bought it from the Pope Estate saying the floors couldn't be leveled without destroying the walls, so she was told.  That was a long time ago.

Looks Wonderful!  I'm so glad someone decided to invest in it and save it.

As I live just a few blocks from this house, I've loved watching it become reborn from the ashes of neglect. I understand parts of this house may be antebellum. I talked to some of the construction workers and they told me all of the nails in the framework had square heads (very old!). Seeing the stucco come off to reveal lovely wooden siding was especially satisfying. I kept waiting for the rest of the stucco to come off - maybe sometime.

Oh, and one particular thing that always fascinated me about this house: functional shutters. Look around town and you'll see that about 95 percent of modern shutters are for visual flair only, and in fact are quite ridiculous if taken literally (far too small for giant windows, etc.). The Pope House appears to have always had these real shutters, and I note that the current owners removed them for renovation, then replaced them when finished. Applause.

Luke, you are right about the shutters.  I love the idea of workable shutters too and know they would cost so much more to attach.  If my memory is correct, the Gardners built a new house in Searcy and did the real shutters.  I need to drive by that house and see if they are still there.  I'm sure the Pope house will not last many more years because it is on a big lot and perfect for apartments.  But maybe they can wrap them around the house.

Dana, it does look good now, doesn't it.
