Formal dining room holiday dinners where you get a second helping of that killer green bean casserole, more carved light turkey meat and just a smidgen of sweet potato.

Ranch style homes created by a San Diego California architect Cliff May meant big changes coming. Major ones. Shake the Etch O Sketch vigorously as you lay out this new housing design on one floor. Start building in a whole new way to hold down costs and mirror the lifestyle of a new house buying public. Open design, squash and park that dining room in to a quick and easy corner of the kitchen, living room. Instead of four full walls, just throw up a short stub divider a few feet long. To give the illusion of a room reduced to double duty for that kitchen or living room.

Ditto for the open front hall foyer room where you used to hang coats in that closet by the front door for those house party guests. Just shorted it up a tad with another stub half wall. With a planter that never has real vegatation. None through out all the revolving door owners that come and go in this long, lean ranch. The one where the builder loosened up the glass budget with a large living room picture window. Not just to look out for the owner either. Designed for the folks out on the street curb driving or walking by to look in that ranch style home.

To see that holiday display created inside that used to be reserved for the formal dining room that is MIA, rubbed out, gone. Not used or justified any more.

The other windows in the bathroom, bedrooms, kitchen are the half style ones to cut costs. And good luck if there was a fire cranking them open, crawling out surrounded by billowing house fire smoke with a loved one or two under each arm.

Rotating house parties where invited people in to your home, your castle stopped. We're going out.

Celebrations down at the club, out at a restaurant now. Or you own another place for vacations on a lake, pond and just are not in that primary home much any more.  Maybe your spare time sitting on a bleacher, gym bench watching sports. On in the pick up game. Sleeping, doing laundry, eating on the run but not home much. Holding down extra jobs for kids braces, college tuition keeping you anywhere but home. No body home except the cat, fish, house plants.

The ranch design missing the steep roof, the eave dormers, the open porch that was not used for conversation on swings any more. No time. You're on the road. Maybe to the mall for a little retail therapy. That lasts for short intervals as you whip out the plastic, get an artificial high in your attempt to "stimulate the economy". Like a patriotic real American doing your part. And what about the car? Let's saw open a hole in the cellar and park the Edsel in there. Done. Rambling ranch, the basic 5/3/1 design where in subdivisions, you do need GPS to find your way home the first couple months in the sea of sameness. But when you become scared of stairs, need less of a traffic pattern with that walker, that one floor ranch looks a lot like a home that just makes sense in the final long run.

So many of my clients want ranch or ramblers as we call them here in the Midwest now.  It is a great way to "stretch" a budget and get all the living space on one level.
