It's official. Ft Sam Houston, TX, home of the Combat Medic, is now Joint Base San Antonio. Fort Sam has turned over its civilian employees, real property and budget over to the Air Force. Joint Base San Antonio was created as a mandate of the 2005 Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) to consolidate support functions of nearby installations under one military service. The joint base is managed by the 502nd Air Base Wing commander, Air Force Brig. Gen. Len Patrick, and is composed of Lackland AFB, Randolph AFB, and Fort Sam Houston. Each of the three bases will maintain its name and heritage.
Joint Base San Antonio supports a population of 80,000. It supports students at 3 installations- more than 150,000 annually. The work force is around 8,000 personnel. It has an annual budget around $700 million, and a plant replacement value of $10.3 billion. Joint Base San Antonio has become the largest installation for the Department of Defense in the United States.
BAMC (Brooke Army Medical Center) at Fort Sam Houston became SAMMC (San Antonio Military Medical Center) in 2005 following the recommendation of BRAC to move the inpatient services and related specialty care from Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC).
All the medical training for the Army, Navy, and Air Force is conducted at Fort Sam Houston, TX, or at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), which is a premiere Army hospital and Level I Trauma center, providing world class care for America's wounded warriors, and training for Army, Navy and Air Force clinicians.
More than 12,500 new job positions will be created at Joint Base San Antonio in six targeted industries: health care and health care education; communications; technology; intelligence; and security.
Of those new positions, 4,000 are new students and the remaining 8,500 will be DoD Military and civilian personnel. BRAC will be a multi-billion dollar project for Military City, USA.
