Every year the DIXIE letters are touched up on the Dixie Rock (also known as the Sugarloaf), part of Pioneer Park on Red Hills Parkway that sits high above the valley floor. It is visible from any location throughout the city and is a constant reminder of southern Utah's history. When I see this rock, I always think of the song that was written for this area:
The DIXIE Song
Are you from Dixie?
I said from Dixie.
Where the fields of cotton beckon to me.
We're glad to see ya
To say, "how be ya?"
And the friends we're longin' to see.
If you're from Santa Clara, Washington or St. George, fine,
Anywhere below the Iron County line,
Then you're from Dixie.
Hurray for Dixie
‘Cause I'm from Dixie, too!"
Some say the nickname DIXIE comes from the days of growing cotton but also may also describe the mild climate and more than 300 days of sunshine annually. The song written by Roene di Fiore is sung at most public events by our St. George City Mayor, Dan McArthur while everyone joins in. Here we go and sing along...
Are you from Dixie?
I said from DIXIE...
