The Importance of About Me Pages

About MeOne of the most frequently visited pages after a site's landing page is the "About Me" page.  I am still amazed that there are REALTORS® out there who don't have anything more than contact info on their "About Me" pages, if they even have an "About Me" page to begin with.

You need to think of your "About Me" page as your online resume.  REALTORS® are always looking for their next "job", right?  If your website is your job interview, your "About Me" tells a potential "employer" (ie, client) what skills and experience you bring to the job.  You wouldn't go to a job interview without a resume, would you?  Not very smart!  So, what exactly should be on your "About Me" page?

Think "Journalism 101" - Who? What? Why? Where? When? How?  Who are you?  What do you have to offer?  Whey should a potential client want to use you for their real estate transactions?  When are you available?  How can you help them with their real estate needs?

It's in the Details - This is a sales job.  Showcase your skills, experience, expertise.  People want to know exactly what you bring to the table.  The "less is more" approach won't cut it here.

Add Some Personality - Just like successful blogging helps potential clients understand who you are as a person, so can your "About Me" page.  Use fun videos, photos, trivia, interests, etc to help convey to your visitors exactly who you are, even outside of real estate.  If they can relate to the individual, they are more likely to contact you for business.

Keep it Updated - As your job history changes, so does your resume.  The same is true for your "About Me" page.  When you take a new class, learn a new skill or gain any new knowledge, make sure to update your page.  Keep your keywords updated to reflect any new changes as well.

Make it Visible - This should be an obvious one.  You want to makes sure people can find your "About Me" page easily.  It doesn't matter how wonderful you make your page if no one sees it.

When working on your website, don't forget the importance of your "About Me" page.  Neglecting this can actually cost you website visitors and clients.

Heather:  I have marveled as well... when I have seen all the wasted opportunities that were so obvious when I looked at folks "about me" pages.  Both on outside blogs, and on the Active Rain "Profile Page" that clicking on the "more about me" link below your picture leads them to.

By the way... I think I very much over-did it on my own profile page here on Active Rain.  I would honestly welcome your opinion on it, and any suggestions you might have to improve it... by personal email, if you would be so kind.

Thanks for a great post.  "suggested."

Heather, I had mine named "Why Results" but then started using Mozilla and found the font did not fit across the bar and went in to the next line.  Just a few days ago I changed the name to About so I'm glad to see you say this.

It's so very important to have a good "About Me" page, Stacia.  Don't neglect it.  I see many realestate professionals without one or with a very simple, "canned" page.  Make it as unique as you are.

I'll take a look at it and let you know any thoughts/suggestions I might have, Karen.

You can call it whatever you want, Marchel.  But make sure people understand that it is about you.  While I appreciate the uniqueness of "Why Results", it may confuse a visitor to your site (besides the fact that it didn't fit in the bar.  The harder it is for visitors to find something on your site, the more likely they are to give up and move on.  Keeping it simple in instances like that isn't a bad thing.

Thanks, Sue.

I would say "yes", Fred.  You need to give some information about you on your landing page.  But that should really be more focused on your potential clients (what they are looking for, what they can find here, how you can help, etc) than you.  That's what an "About Me" page is all about.  Remember, the landing page is the interview.  The "About Me" page is your resume.

Thanks, Kate.  I appreciate the compliment.

You're welcome, Tim.  That's what's great about AR.

I appreciate that Gary and Lora.  Doesn't look like they took the "suggestion", but I'm glad you saw it and thought it worthy of a suggestion anyway.  That's much more important than a feature, right?
