There’s a HUGE Road Runner in Greer Ranch, Murrieta CA

There’s a HUGE Road Runner in Greer Ranch, Murrieta 92562.

My wife glanced into our backyard through the kitchen window and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! There’s a HUGE roadrunner in our backyard!” My wife glanced into our backyard through the kitchen window and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! There’s a HUGE roadrunner in our backyard!”

I looked to where she was pointing, and sure enough... there walked (yes, he was walking, not running) the largest roadrunner I had ever seen.

I’ve seen roadrunners strolling around our Greer Ranch neighborhood from time-to-time, but they were all relatively small birds... about 6-8 inches in height, and very lean.

But this guy was HUGE! He was easily 12-inches tall and looked like he weighed two-or-three pounds. (No wonder Wile E. Coyote was always trying to catch Road Runner!)

There are two species of road runner in Southern CA. This is cklealry of the larger species.

In LA they would cal that a pheasant.

Bill, I'm always amazed at a photographer's ability to grab a camera so quickly and capture such a picture.

Chris, impressive comment .  AR has a bona fide Ornithologist is the house.

Great shot.  I don't think I have ever seen a road runner.  We have plenty of bird species here in Galveston, but no road runners!  Thanks for sharing!

Hi Gary. This was the biggest I’ve seen… all the others were half its size.

Hi Chris. I did not know there were two species. Thanks for the info!

Hello Leilani. He spent about five minutes perusing our backyard for food.  (Gave me plenty of time to grab my camera.) A couple of times, as he wandered around the planter, he would suddenly leap over a bush and pounce on something… like a cat pouncing on its prey.  I assume he was nabbing bugs or lizards. (We have a lot of small lizards around here.)

Hey Brian!  As I noted to Leilani, he (luckily) gave me plenty of time to grab the camera. When I went to get my camera, I was certain he’d be gone by the time I returned and was ready to snap the photo.  But he was apparently so focused on the cornucopia in our planter that he didn’t even notice me peering at him through our window.

Hi Deb. Then I’m glad to be the first to person to show you one! (He doesn’t quite look like Road Runner in the cartoon series… though they do seem to prefer to run, not fly… just like in the cartoon.)

Hi Jane! Yep, I’m not sure what they’re feeding this guy, but whatever it is, he gets a lot!

BHAG? Nope, haven’t done it, yet… So I’m heading over to your blog to check it out!

When we lived out in Spring Valley, we were always seeing large road runners. Not so much here in La Mesa.

Hey Jim. I’m guessing maybe La Mesa is a bit too developed for them. Spring Valley is more rural (I believe) like my Greer Ranch area.
