Moving Pains....from PC to PC.

Real Estate Agent with Lake and Lodge Realty LLC

I honestly think I had less issues changinghomes than when I decided to upgrade my PC. At least I picked one with the same operating system but all the little programs we don't think about stop working. Usually because the passwords were left behind. Not a hard fix but a time consumer. The worse part is it sneaks up on you. You think your are set and then you go to answer an email and ...oh yeah, all my emails are over there. Photoshop...gone. Excel....gone. Makes me wonder if it wouldn't have been easier to upgrade my memory and add a hard drive to the old one. I am really liking the speed of the new PC but think I should set the old one next to me so I can do a slow migration over to the new one. Good project for a winter weekend in Michigan. Back to work and thanks for reading.

I always save the important files to my external hard drive and copy over that way!!  makes it easy - two folders - business and personal!

Hi Randy It really depends what operating system you are using-the newer ones are pretty easy to migrate all your data and settings from the old one

Oh yes the dreaded computer upgrade.  Last time I upgraded I switched to a MacBook and I hope it will last for years.  I like that I can sync my computer and my phone.  I suppose that would make the next upgrade a little smoother.  Some of my old contacts are still in the old PC, but I guess they weren't that important anyway.

I can't understand why there's not an easier way to switch computers (you would think they could come up with some magic wand type thing). I too use my external hard drive to move things around on.

Randy - After many years of thought about this problem, I've learned to use e-mail in the cloud, The rest of the data I back up to a removable hard drive periodically and load to my laptop. The biggest thing is having my e-mail in a location where i can read it from any computer. I use gmail.

I bought a "clickfree" on QVC and it's so easy to change computers now.  I don't give it a second thought.  I bought a new 1 tb.  My former one was 500gb  It made the process easy. :) Also, I have one computer that won't load but when I hook up my clckfree it starts right up!! Go figure.
