Guess it's not a BIG secret: An Early Girl Scout Cookie RecipeGirl Scout Cookies

My granddaughter joined the Girl Scouts in late 2009.  Last year she recruiting her GRANDPARENTS to help her to achieve her goal for cookie sales.  Smart little entrepreneur, isn't she?!

I thought I would do a little research on the history of Girl Scout cookies.  It seems that the earliest sale of Girl Scout cookies dates back to 1917.  Imagine the celebration in another 6 years, when the Girl Scouts will celebrate 100 YEARS of Girl Scout cookie sales!

During my research, I came across an early recipe for Girl Scout cookies.  Many of us might even have these ingredients in our cupboards and pantries right now!

An Early Girl Scout Cookie® Recipe

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar plus additional amount for topping (optional)
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder

Cream butter and the cup of sugar; add well-beaten eggs, then milk, vanilla, flour, salt, and baking powder. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Roll dough, cut into trefoil shapes, and sprinkle sugar on top, if desired. Bake in a quick oven (375°) for approximately 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Makes six- to seven-dozen cookies.

Hi Donna - with that much butter to that little flour, these cookies can't be anything but delicious!

Donna - My granddaughter is a Girl Scout.  So you know I have my Thin Mints on order.  I love to throw them in a blender with ice cream and make thin-mint milkshakes.

I wish we had Girl Scouts in Canada.  We have Girl Guides but they only have one type of cookie and it is an Oreo rip-off.  This recipe sounds great Donna!

PS.  I received a lovely Christmas card from you on Thursday and I haven't had a second to say thank you.  Can you believe our two postal services?!!

Hello Myrl~ I never thought about making milkshakes.  What a great idea!

Poor Susan!  No Girl Scout cookies.  That's awful!  (Glad you FINALLY got the card!  Yeesh!)

So, what's the variety of the G.S. recipe given here?  Is it that buttery, flower shaped one?

That's what I'm thinking Karen, at least an early version of today's cookie.  The website didn't say which one.

Donna, I'm thinking I could give a Girl Scout my $3.50 & skip the baking!  LOL.  Interesting recipe, thanks for posting it.

Donna, This recipe sounds like a good sugar cookie or shortbread cookie. It's time to get in the kitchen and start baking.
