We techies have a bad habit of using jargon that means nothing to normal people. I'm certain I've already been
guilty of that in the few posts I've made here.
Much of what I've written has been about this technology called CMS -- which stands for Content Management System. But knowing what the acronym means does nothing to explain what it is... so here's what a CMS is:
A CMS is a website that uses a database to hold your information.
If you can log into your current website, click "Add new content" type some stuff into an editor and click SAVE, then you're already using a CMS.
Oooh, even a better example... ActiveRain is a CMS. (bloggers are considered a type of CMS) To make a post do you need to know *any* HTML? That's what makes a CMS special: They're easily maintained by people that don't even have to know what CMS means.
A CMS can be super cheap or extra inexpensive. If you would like to learn more about the six cost categories of a CMS (or learn why a Joomla CMS) might be a fit for you. read see page 3 from our 1st LappyHour.
(Here's what a CMS can look like, but remember, a CMS can look like anything you want it to.)
