Blogphobics, Come On Out and Play

I was surprised when my recent post entitled The Top Ten Reasons to Blog on ActiveRain, exposed (via comments), an element of ActiveRain that I didn't know existed: The Blogphobics. These are our members that are hiding in the shadows, reading and commenting, but not writing. Who even knows what hidden talent exists in our midst?

Brad Andersohn and I had a conversation about this that day, brainstorming on exactly what we could do to to help the blogphobics get over their affliction. After all, being blogphobic on ActiveRain is like going on a cruise and staying in your tiny room, occasionally commenting to your travel mates about the happenings around the ship. NO FUN AND DEFEATS THE PURPOSE.

Brad graciously put together a starter kit, and (as he so loves to do) linked from here to eternity. Please immediately bookmark this excellent piece, and read when you have time.

I have always thought blogging was much like the speech class you had to take in high school. The thought of putting yourself out there, and having to talk about something for 5-10 minutes, brought on a kind of unreasonable fear that made your hands shake and your knees turn to jelly.

So okay, these are not fond memories....but remember what happened by the end of the semester? You came to know these classmates via their stories, and the whole class became one little community sharing ideas. You realized everyone else had to overcome that same unreasonable fear. You became fascinated listening to others share their opinions and life stories.

And, yes, sharing yourself became easier. Much to your amazement, you actually got better and better, and the fear subsided as you began to feel you were talking to friends instead of strangers.

Lessons:

  1. The first blog is always the hardest ( I bet everyone here had something stir in the pit of their stomach before hitting that submit button the first time)
  2. Telling us what you think via your stories and ideas makes you part of our community in a way that simply commenting will never do
  3. Presentation does not matter nearly as much as what you are saying to us. You do not need to know how to link or post pictures...it took me forever to figure this out, and I was still getting featured!
  4. You will only get better by blogging yourself, not by reading about blogging. I have watched many ActiveRain members blossom into incredible bloggers by simply sticking with it. Brad Andersohn, one of our premier bloggers, started out as a "wall of words" guy, but look at him now.
  5. Do not blog for features, for points or for search engines. Blog for the same reason you have a conversation with a co-worker or a friend: because you have an opinion to express, a story to tell, or information to share.
  6. Keep it short and sweet. Always, always err on the side of too short. This applies to the length of your blog, the length of your sentences, and the length of your paragraphs.

Janet, I hope this helps those who have a fear of the written word. I have a friend who is the same way. He has great ideas and opinions, but is afraid to put them into words. I'll have to direct him to your post.

Jason Sardi, you big tease. You were NOT a blogphobic. I refuse to believe it! Love ya!

Daniel: I can think of dozens of reasons to join AR, even if you never throw out one blog. But honestly, blogging is the best part.

Daniel S. Well, yes, I suppose you could look at it like that. But I think one of the main reasons people are blogphobic is they are terrified they may say something they regret. Well, what if you do? So what? Start safe and get edgy a little later.

Janet, I think there are fearful people who are afraid, that's why we need to encourage new members and let them find themselves and be nice to them.

Janet- I know there are many people reading my blog and commenting who are afraid to start blogging. It is always scary to take the first step, but then you take another and another, it gets easier with each new step. For me, this was never an issue in school or in life. My favorite things to do are read, write and give speeches and teach. Now, on the other hand, don't ask me to go into a room full of people and speak one on one with someone I do not know. Fear is the false illusions appearing real. Katerina

Hmmm, new jargon "blogphobics".  We used to call this "lurking".

I think blogging mimics life, there are lurkers in real life too.  Some people just don't have much to say or are shy.  I go through sprurts where I just lurk and sometimes I write several times a day.

Guilty as charged!!  However, it's not that I'm a fearful person or AFRAID to blog, I just haven't figured out how.  It took an unbelievable amount of time yesterday just uploading photos to localism, but I did it.  Baby steps, baby steps.  Thanks Brad for the "How to".  Is there an easy way to print all these links off to create a manual? (This question will probably confirm how little I know about all this stuff!) Maybe my first blog should be a defense for all us "lurkers"

Some of my first articles from years ago were on this topic... the silent audience that has an incredible amount of information just waiting to be exposed.

I refer to it as the "Blogfire" crisis in a community, when there are a few flames burning brightly and enough fuel nearby to make an incredible impact.

Take a look at my older blogger 101 articles, or articles like blogging and being a kid.

Deborah: I disagree! All of us need a little encouragement to take the first step. Becoming a blogger for most is hard. This was not true of me, or for anyone else who considers writing to be an "outlet". But I think we are in the minority. I couldn't wait to start writing blogs, and it never occured to me to read other blogs for the longest time.

Suzanne and Diane: I hope you are both right.

Rebecca: Thank you (I think). Is a writing machinge the opposite of a blogphobic? Oh, yeah, that was a blogaholic.

Andrew: By all means give him whatever encouragement you need to get him writing!

Missy: We are nice, I think. I have written over a hundred blogs and had plenty of people disagree with my ideas. But everyone was always nice.

Katerina: All of us DO have unreasonable fears. I am with you, I am never afraid of expressing myself by writing, and as is obvious, take great joy in doing so. But as I have discussed with some other members, I have mixed feelings about celebrity. There is a side of me that is very private, and would turn around and run if I felt my privacy was in any way violated. I know, just me, and MY unreasonable fear. I would NOT make a good celebrity.

Tracey: When you do write, it is wonderful. I am a fan of yours and have lurked around your blogs. Seriously! Somehow, I think you and I would get along well. I hope we get to meet someday.

Lisa: Please write that blog! In Defense Of Blogphobics. Or how about this. My name is Lisa and I am a Blogphobic. It would be hysterical!

Jason: You are absolutely NOT going to get me to believe someone who writes the way you do was afraid of a little old blog. I thought you were like Sarah and me: needed an outlet the # 11 reason. Love ya!

Barry: I just looked over your blogs and became completely mesmerized looking at them. I subscribed, and will read the rest of them as I have time. Thank you for commenting, your writing is unique and unlike anything else I have seen.

You wait until my A&E Biography comes out Janet, then you will know the whole story....:-)

I will say though, I put you and Sarah (as far as writing ability) on a pedestal.  One I hope/desire/will knock off...until the next whiz kid comes along.

You go Blog Girl!  No sooner did you speak it and here it is!!  Talk about taking an idea to the headlines!! Wow!  I hope your post will inspire many to pull their heads out of the sand and "WRITE THAT FIRST POST!"  You have a great writing skill Janet, and a wonderful way with words.  You are an inspiration to us all, and a voice that I hope has found it's home here on the rain for a long time to come.  Congrats on yet another featured post!!  Looking forward to your next post with great anticipation!!  :-)

Write your post, then hold your breathe, it's really not that bad, everyone is waiting to hear what you have to say, don't be Blogphobic!  :-)

I was a total blogaphobic a few months ago.  Still occasionally am actually!  I completely agree that blogs should be short & sweet. I often turn away from the long blog posts (unless they are Sardis).  People need you to get to the point quick or they move on.

I'm afraid some people will always stand on the sidelines. I'm active on several different sites. It's always the same. The reasons are probably always the same. Fear.
