365 Days of Real Estate & Tech - Day 28 -- PC Energy Saver

By

At home, I usually leave one or two of my computers on 24/7 in case I wake up in the middle of the night and wanted to do some work or am too lazy to close all the opened programs and files.

This bad habit cost me about $10 - $15 per computer per month. Imagine a real estate office that have 5, 10, 20, or more computers that are left on 24/7. The low tech way would be to have someone go around the office at the end of the day and turn them off. Another way would be to use the Windows Task Scheduler and schedule a shut down of the computers at say 7PM or 8PM each night.

           Shutdown timer

A better way that I found is to use a free program called Shutdown Timer from Sinvise.com. There are multiple options instead of just shutting down such as logging off, put into sleep mode, or hibernation, which would help save some energy. There are also settings that could trigger the shutdown or sleep mode based on different criterias such as cpu or memory usage.

One of my goal in 2011 is to help preserve our resources by being less wasteful and letting people know ways of helping the environment.

Song - Interesting program. I need a program that goes beyond the typically shut-down for my home office computers that I frequent throughout the day.

Nice tip, Song. I always keep my laptop on - and yes, it does cost me little extra every month. Thanks.
