Falling in Love at the Loving Hut (And Yeah, It's Vegan!)

Falling in Love at the Loving Hut, Phoenix Arizona (And Yeah, It's Vegan!)

I am notoriously not known for being a creature of good health, although you would never know it to look at me. Let's just say that my quick response whenever someone inquires about my eating or workout habits is, "I have good genes." As a rule, I have a long-term hatred towards all vegetables except potatoes, and if you want to get me to the gym you might as well bring a rope and duct tape to gag me with in the car on the way there. I will try to escape. And that's a promise.

My beautiful pregnant sister, however, could not be more the opposite. Although we look practically identical, she is definitely the more health-conscious of the pair. Her hair hangs long like a hippie and she roasts veggies for dinner (habitually). She works at a gym. And no one has to gag her to get her there.

Needless to say, when she wanted to drag me to eat vegan on Saturday afternoon, I was only going willingly because she was past her due date and hungry.

And I am so glad I did!

Loving Hut is a quirky little café located just east of 32nd Street on Indian School Rd. With an extensive menu to choose from, I was already 20 minutes into our pow wow before I could order lunch.

If I hadn´t known any better, I would have sworn that the Sweet and Sour Divine was pure chicken and not a miraculous form of tofu, pressed and de-juiced until it resembled the poultry by taste, texture and sight. And the Clay Pot Sensation?  The tender bean curd was so unlike anything I had ever tasted before that I just had to kind of sit and munch on it a pure state of wonder, my eyes glazed over with stars.

Sweet and Sour Divine

Oh, but wait my friends. It wasn´t over there. When I tried the Rose Lemonade I was seriously convinced that they could drink nothing more than this in Heaven. Who puts real rose petals in LEMONADE?! It was the nectar of the gods. (And that is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth  . . .)

Rose Lemonade

The Loving Hut, that's who!

I highly recommend this local favorite to anyone, traditional carnivore or otherwise. If you don't fall in love with at least one dish on the menu, then you're just playing hard to get!

Hi Jessica, what a fantastic meal!  I am just as surprised as you about the tofu tasting so good!  The rose lemonade looks incredible!  Perhaps you should hang out with your sister more often and stay away from those pizza joints!  ^_~  Hey-how is PAZ????  We need another picture of her!

Hi Jim - I highly recommend it. I promise you, speaking as a girl who just ate a medium-rare steak for dinner, you won't be disappointed. I believe there is a Glendale location as well - a bit closer for us folks here in the West Valley!

Hi Bruce! Don't worry - Paz will be making her appearance here soon I am sure. She is currently hanging out with my parent's basset, Huckleberry, who recently moved West from the Hoosier state. (I highly recommend seeking out the lemonade. It was honestly the best drink I have ever tasted.)

Jessica,

How cool is that.  I do not have good eating habits, but am trying to improve.  Just foung NuGo Nutrition bars that actually taste good.  (Seems nothing that is good for you tastes that good.)

Awesome that you found an incredible place to eat and enjoy.

All the best, Michelle

Jessica... My wife loves the Loving Hut... There is one on 35th Ave and Union Hills. I know I can always get extra points with her if I stop by the restaurant and buy something for her... :O)

I'm pretty much like you in that you'd have to take me kicking and screaming to a place like that.  I have changed my eating habits over the past 6 months, but one thing at a time.  One thing at a time.  The food does look good.

Nice to see that you are supporting your sister while she is pregnant. Now, let's get to the sweets.

Hi Jessica,

I eat vegetarian food all the time. The meal you ate looks delicious! I've never had a lemonade with rose petals ....something to think about doing in the future.

This post has me drooling. Did you eat the rose petals too, or are they just there to be pretty?

Good for you! I don't watch many cooking shows, however my wife (she's a fantastic cook) and I watched Emeril's show recently and he was cooking a lot of healthy meals that looked surprisingly delicious. I'm talking about food I would have never even tried, but now I would!

The moral of the story here seems to be . . . veggies ARE good! And tofu, too! If only I can wrap my mind around it . . . .

Aaron - the rose petals are edible! I don't necessarily recommend sucking them up through the straw on purpose, but a petal or two surprisingly adds a lot of flavor to the drink!

Karen - Any particular recipes you recommend for us non-veggie lovers? I'm intrigued!

Charita - Best luck in your new eating endeavors. I'm curious to know what your steps have been the past few months in your leaps towards better eating habits. I could probably use some inspiration :)

I love the Loving Hut.  They have another place at 35th Ave & Union Hills too.  Also, if you want to try Vegan food that tastes more like confort food than "healthy" try Green on Scottsdale Rd in Tempe. Great stuff!

I wish that restaurant was here in my area.  My daughter is vegan and usually I don't like the places she chooses to go.  When I choose an eatery, very often she has trouble finding a suitable dish.

Your lunch sounds yummy!  (and your sister is beautiful!)  Best wishes to her....and to you, 'Auntie'

The problem with Vegan meals is that they never turn out that way if you try to make them yourself! I am gonna check this place out though. Sounds so good!

Abdon, check it out! It really is surprising, although, like you, I am not so inspired as to actually venture to make the meal myself. Doesn't it always taste better when someone else cooks, anyways?

Chris - Thanks so much! The baby has arrived! :) Months of anticipation and he is just perfect!

Carla - Someone else mentioned Green to me in an earlier post. I am going to have to look into and share with the new mom in my family! She is going to need a girl's day out to lunch again (once she gets settled in with the new arrival, of course!)
