Selling Your Home -- Preserving Your Memories

Real Estate Agent with Douglas Elliman Real Estate 516-457-7103

Long Island home for saleWhenever I prepare to list a home for sale on Long Island, I walk through the house, room by room with the owner or his/her representative and make mental notes.  Often, especially in the case of a property long inhabited by someone whose life is closer to the finish line than the beginning of the race, I get an emotional sense of the space.  Feelings get all jumbled up with the furnishings and knick-knacks that proclaim the presence of a family no longer in residence.

Such is the case with a property we're readying for sale. Filled to the brim with mementos of a lifetime, it falls to the children to determine what to dispose of and what to keep, to brighten the remaining days of their beloved parent.  As so often happens, when the younger generation moved out, one by one, the space grew larger and the need to fill it, stronger.

I will do whatever I can to stage this home for sale, to prepare it for the next family who will fill it with love and laughter, creating memories of their own, but in the process, I will be mindful of the echoes of the past and the delicate task with which I've been charged.  The dignity of the space will be preserved, honoring the life lived here.

Geri - you said it so eloquently....  "As so often happens, when the younger generation moved out, one by one, the space grew larger and the need to fill it, stronger."  Thank you for being who you are and helping families go through this process with compassion and dignity.

What a wonderful way to express these feelings. It is so true and such a hard thing to do for someone else.

Today we deal with so many distressed properties that we just have no feel for the memories that the house may have had, I miss that.

Geri--Your last statement, 'I will do whatever I can...."  Sounds like some sort of sacred oath that is taken by home stagers.  I am sure that not all REALTORS/stagers go at it with as much heart as you do!!

Geri:  Good for you.  It is difficult to tell an owner, who has lived in a home for decades, that some things are best packed now - when everything they see and touch is a part of their history.  I believe you can do it with your sensitivity.

Hello Geri.  This is a lovely post.  It is difficult to lead owners in the right direction to get their home properly staged without hurting their feelings.  This is something we all deal with in listing homes, especailly those where the people have lived a long time.
