By now you know I'm still very fond of the Newport Beach area and always look forward to my next visit. Before I move on to other subjects in future posts I'll share one more interesting feature of Balboa Island.
During one of my morning walks I passed by the Balboa Island Ferry. The ferry has operated on the island since about 1919 with the first two-car ferry making its debut in 1922, charging a dime for the one way crossing from Balboa Island to the Balboa peninsula, about 800 feet away.
Sometime during the 1950's three new boats were launched, the Admiral, Captain and Commodore each capable of handling 3 cars and 75 passengers. Currently about a million people a year enjoy the short ride across the bay.
One interesting and unusual thing about this local business is that it is still owned and operated by the founding family. Surely the Beek family have had offers to sell over the years, but have chosen to keep it in the family, a wise decision. If you visit the area be sure to visit Balboa Island and ride the historic Balboa Island Ferry.
