Can You Recommendations for the BEST High Definition Digital Camcorder?

I actually had a huge monstrousity very similar to this tv camera at one time.

I've fallen behind on this bit of technology..

Through the years I've gone from the full size heavy carry on your shoulder video recorder (has been discarded a long time ago),

Had this camera next....

to the small-tape gotta' pop into a larger sleeve to view tape recorder (discarded also),

To the video recorders on my digital cameras.. currently using the Nikon D90 for everything.

The recent challenge by Active Rain and Kodak got me to thinking that I should buy a flip, or a pocket camcorder. (I entered a video that I had taken with my Nikon..)

There are so many claims out there by companies.. and I get all of the advertisements.. HELP!

I really want one that a lot of agents are using to shoot videos of their listings etc.. so if you are, would you share which one you're using.. please?

Thank you.

Man tons of great information.  One of the biggest things I'm planning on doing is filming the classes that I teach.  The idea of needing a camera with a wireless bluetooth mic.  Last time I looked they were between 800-1200.  Way to expensive for me then.  Still not sure I want to spend that type of money.

I'd love to hear if anybody knows about this.  I've seen a lot of great comments in this post and have been cutting and pasting the good ones for later research.

@Fred,

Great explanation. I have digital Canon photo), and recently got a wide angle Canon L lenses for a full frame camera next purchase), and compared to standard, and it is incredible. Full of light, all details are clear.

I never thought the difference is so dramatic.

But then the  price tag bites, it is $1,400 (16-35)

Judi,

two things, first, the camera does not create, the operator does.

That said... in march, sony will release two new p&s, full hd video, wide-angle lens, in camera 6 frame hdr...

that's where my money goes.

I take still shots with my digital sony camera.  Then use photo story 3 to make a video with them.  Works great it's easy, and only 1 camera to carry around.

After Commenting, I actually went back & wrote a blog post then.  It goes into much greater detail than my comment above.

My (MyTouch 4G) phone from Tmobile has an HD Video camera built into phone.  It takes very good quality videos and suits my needs.  It has zoom in/out capabilities. I guess it all depends on how High Tech you want to get.

I own/use the Sony "Bloggie" (not "Blogger"), the pocket camcorder shown in Jon Z's post (#24), which has 5x (not 3x) optical zoom (vs digital zoom: less info, less definition).

Upside

  • Inexpensive (got an unused one on eBay for $158)

  • Really does fit in my pocket

  • 5 MP jpg's (with 5x OPTICAL zoom)

  • Good behind-the camera narration audio quality without external microphone

  • Great for blog entries. Content I king. Video is king of content.

Downside / Things to know

  • Tripod or stabilizer leg is needed (as for all videos - to avoid "the shakes")

  • Not as spontaneous as a flip or other pocket camcorders - the swivel out viewer makes a subject feel more "on camera"

  • Poor in low lighting. Passable (for a blog post) in average lighting

  • A top-end smart phone is comparable in (one-time prchase) price and performance

Overall: A good quality - convenience - price balance. Maybe not right for "professional quality" RE listings (who are you competing against?), but handy .... and, IMHO, better than no video.

A YouTube channel should be up the top of an agent's must-have marketing asset list, right after a website and blog.

There are sure many suggestions here. Only one I have is don't disregard the need for that wide angle lens no matter what!  I've tried the cheap attached lenses/add ons in the past & it's just not worth it.  It is a required part of our business.

I've been reading through the comments and I am overwhelmed by the response to my question.  Thank you each one..

Loreena, Thank you for the link to your post. I don't want another bulky camera to shoot video with.. I am hoping for a true pocket camcorder that shoots clear video, good sound, wide angle, and the battery will last longer than 30 minutes.. maybe I'm hoping for too much.  Thanks so much for sharing your info.. It helps to see what others have tried the videos that they did.  Wide angle is definitely a must!

Lottie, Maybe they will have a new version out that will take care of those needs.. :)

Geri, Thank you for sharing both info and the link.. your video looks clear and has a lot of picture in it!  I checked the Vado Third Generation Pocket Camcorder.  Amazon has it for $99 & free shipping.. states wider angle than other pocket camcorders but does not say how wide.. a lot of info on Amazon.. is supposed to work well in low light also.. Definitely on the "Consider" list. Thank you.

Marilyn, Thank you! I've been reading about these two.

Rick, Really like the image stabilization feature of this camera.. Thank you.

Deborah, Sounds like you figured out what you needed!  Thanks for sharing

Jon, Good considerations!  Also looks like it would be comfortable in your hand, being able to turn it sides ways with the flip out screen.. hmmm.. Something to think about.

Mark, Sounds like you like it.  I did like the video that Gerri shared doen with the Vado. :) Thank you.

One thing that I should have mentioned in my post:

The thing about using my DSLR Nikin D90.. is that you have to focus before you start and then if you zoom in or out as you walk around, it looses focus.. I've tried using it in non-realestate situations such as sporting events etc and once the subject moves, they are out of fous.

Judi:  I've got a Sony Handycam which I am just beginning to use.  Definitely need a wide angle ... not sure what the options are or how much it will cost.  The video quality is super!

Mitch, the Sony Handycam sure looks like it would do the job.. just not sure that I want to spend that much on a camcorder.. been down that road and have a ton invested in my Nikon and lenses.. Do love the features though on the Handycam.  Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Patrick, hmmmm had not considered that difference.. Gives us something to think about. Thanks for mentioning that.

Linda, Thanks and thanks for sharing the link.  Like the looks of it.. shoots both photos and videos.

Frank, Thank you for sharing.  Maybe it has an attachment available?  I love the pricing on these cameras.

Mike, I was surprised that the questionaire did not ask more questions.. There was only 3 or 4.  Thanks for sharing. So what one did it tell you that you should buy?

Jim, I actually have used my smartphone in a pinch.. but want something else similar in size to use that has a little more clairty.  I also have an HtC.  Thanks for sharing.

Kimo, How is the wide-angle on that camera?  Those can still be purchased on Amazon.

Fred, I definitley agree on the low light capability and the wide angle lens but I have not been happy with using the Digital SLR camera.. the video does not re-focus as you record.. when you walk around or your subject moves, the focus is not clear. Thanks for adding to the discussion and appreciate the points that you bring up.

Peggy, Thank you.. I hadn't thought too much about million.. in fact, you're the first person that's mentioned it.  :)

Mike, Amazon has a Sony wireless bluetooth mic that looks like it would work with camcorders that have a mic port.. the mic is priced at $144. :)

Terkel, Sounds interesting..  and sounds like you've done your research. :)

Jeremy, Looks like you found what you like and might even make a little money through your links on AR to your affiliate store.  Thanks for sharing the info on this equipment, also for the mention in your post.  Definitely a consideration... on the "Consider" list.

Bobby, Sounds like you have your choice.  Thanks for sharing!

Tom, Thanks for more input on the Bloggie..  I do like the looks of it. The low light quality is one of my considerations.  :)

I was ready Jeremy's post on video cameras and he linked your post to his.  I think I am inclined to try the Kodak Playtouch.  I have heard good things about it and it is cheap!

Judi - It's funny to see your post as I was just taling to my daughter and husband about the quality or maybe lack of quality in the new Playtouch pocket video I just bought.  I am really disappointed in it so wouldn't advise it for sure!!! Best of luck to you.  You were smart to ask here on AR!

Hi Judi,

I burned through 3 flip minos before they discontinued them. Had it in my pocket at all times, no matter where I was.

Now I have the Kodak something or other. The mic picks up wind and I don't like the design.

Looking for something as solid, as easy, and with as good software as the Flip...

Almost 800 videos on my you tube channel to date!

Phil
