~ Record Low with Saguaro ~
Tucson Mountain Park
Last night the temperature hit an all-time low (for February) of 15 degrees in Tucson. Two people died of exposure. Mother Nature is unpredictable and unforgiving at times. Southwest Gas announced a Civil Emergency as it ran out of natural gas in parts of Tucson and Sierra Vista. 14,000 homes are without heat, and service is not likely to be restored for three days. Thousands of homes experienced water damage as unprotected pipes burst.
This saguaro is unperturbed by the human drama. It endured the cold, as it has for more than 100 years, and smiled this morning at the sun. It may be bitterly cold, but the desert is still a thing of beauty.
