The idea was originally started by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African-American historian, as "Negro History Week" to help blacks get better recognition, more respectable authority in history books, and celebrate their significant roles in shaping U.S. history. Since 1976, the month of February has been proclaimed Black History Month in the U.S. Canada also celebrates in February and the United Kingdom celebrates in October.
