I'll make this quick because you are almost out of time to appeal your property taxes, especially if your property is in Detroit. Hopefully you've already received your notice of tax assessment from the city or township, if you haven't contact your assessor's office. If you feel that your taxable value (SEV = State Equalized Value) is too high you can make an appeal at the Board of Review, typically held in March. But for Detroit properties there is an additional level to the appeal process; the Board of Assessors review, which is held in the first half of February (1st-15th). If you miss the window to appeal your taxes you are out of luck until the following year.
