"Molasses going Uphill on a Cold Day" - a Trip Down 8MB Memory Lane

Is it just me, or is anyone else experiencing 'snail-like' response time on the network lately? I ran out to mow the lawn while I was waiting for the screen to change. If this pace keeps up, I just might be able to get my 10 comments in before bedtime!

It always amazes me how spoiled we've become with high-speed internet. I remember the days of my trusty (well, okay, NOT so trusty) HP Pavillion with it's lightning pace 75MHZ processor and whoppin' 8MB RAM!

Ah, such fond memories! Dial-up modems, boasting blazing 14.4K connections, and the joys of AO-Hell...

Interesting how our attitudes of joy or anger could be so easily influenced by hearing the words, "You've Got Mail!" or "Good-Bye!"

And if you wanted to download a file of any significant size, you would simply 'click' the download button, and head-off to bed. Hopefully, barring any disruptions to your phone signal, the file would be there to greet you over morning coffee.

It's the same kind of annoyance we face at the fast food drive-in line. Our local Jack-in-the-Box (Gag-in-the-Bag for you purists) is the major culprit in our town. They actually have 'marked' parking spaces reserved for people who need extra time to wait while they're food is being prepared.

"Hello?!?! It's called "FAST FOOD!"

And while we're on this subject, what's up with the Express Lane at Safeway? I mean, seriously, the sign says "15 Items or Less." What part of "15" don't people understand? 15 containers of Yoplait yogurt are still 15 items! They don't count as 1! There's a reason it's called the "Express" lane!

These are probably the same people who drive 20mph down the on-ramp to get onto the freeway. At some point, you're supposed to increase your speed to merge with the flow of traffic, right?

I think the Department of Transportation should authorize one day out of the year to be "National Demolition Derby Day." Anyone on the freeway is fair game. Someone moving too slow? Just trade some paint and send them onto the shoulder. The perfect release for all that pent-up road rage!

Well, as Craig Schiller would say, ...."I digress" Maybe I should actually attempt to get some work day today.

Gee, what a concept!

Rich, 99% true and oh so funny! (not having any trouble with the network today) I remember the days of dial up trying to get on to AOL and the busy signal, finally the WELCOME and then the unexpected GOODBYE. The 5 minutes waiting for a website to load. I don't miss it a bit! We don't have Safeway's here, I miss the deli, but not the express line! We used to have the same problem in Upstate NY at Grand Union tho... Used to get my knickers in a big time knot!

How bout the folks on the on ramps that cut over the solid white line and not yet up to freeway speed? That's Florida style... Lets go trade some paint on the on-ramps! Yehawwwww

20 mph on the on-ramp isn't the worst.  What's worse is when that person STOPS to let the freeway traffic go by.  ARGH!!

I love the Demolition Derby idea.  I'm sure my front end will be psychadelic with all the paint trades I'd be making. :)

Me too.

I've gotten more gray hairs today.  No, they were already gray.  They're just grayer.

Gives me time to work on another post.  Gives me time to update a few pages on a web site.

Gives me time to scream.

I want a Hummer to intimidate the slow drivers in the left lane - my Cherokee isn't "big" anymore!

Those semi-trucks with the big teeth on the grill are awesome! Would be great for your demolition derby.

AR is seeming really slow today.  Why is that?

I have to suppress the desire to keep clicking the mouse thing.

Your post was right on, Rich, as I sit here griping about AR, and thinking...this is no fun and I might as well go do something else. Of course my other gripe is a bank, who shall remain nameless, that has taken forever to get the loan documents to escrow so the buyer can sign and we can have closing, and has missed every time frame they said they would meet. If my showing does not show today or is late, I am quitting for the day. :(

BTW I enjoyed the post anyhow.

Jeff

You are so funny!  I always think of you living such a peaceful life in WA and it turns out you have the same frustrations as the rest of us.  I particularly share the frustration with the SLOW AR and Internet lately.  It seems to be worse at night for some reason.  And driving...I don't even want to go there!
