Don't Be a Posting Hog & Other Courtesies

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

Fish at the Dallas ArboretumYou labor over the words, the content, how to set it up to catch attention.  What picture/image to incorporate?  Being clever with title and a few quips to keep your readers interested and Post Blog Entry button is clicked.  So much time and thought placed into your post.  Your passion poured out and now just waiting for your ActiveRain friends and hopefully new friends to read your post.

Toggling back and forth .. to see your post enter the line up of new posts.  Then .. wait ... hey, I just posted this and what .. it is already 6 down on the lineup!  What, it has disappeared and it was just put up just two minutes ago.  You click your post and a sinking big 0 viewed shows up.  With high aspirations gone in a flash what happened?

Upon review you notice the same AR member has several posts on the line .. all listings that apparently all were entered at the unfortunate time as you.  Then another AR member as posted some stat reports that were cut & pasted concerning several areas in their region with not content just graphs.  Your post did not have the exposure or chance to be viewed and now with deflated hopes you go back to the drawing board.

Sound familiar?  A few shared thoughts to my ActiveRain friends on posting courtesy ... at least from my observation.

  • Be kind to your fellow members and scatter you posts out over a time span, please do not send all at once .. you will actually give your readers more opportunity to enjoy your posts as well.
  • War stories are great but refrain from use of actual names/agency, we get the idea with "the co-op agent", etc.
  • If a member takes time to give a thoughtful comment on your post, please do the courtesy of responding back to acknowledge their time.
  • Be loyal ... if you subscribe to a member's blog then visit them and comment, celebrate their moments and lend advice when sought.
  • Be appreciative - those who do subscribe and comment on your posts - visit their posts and return the favor.  This is how a great foundation for relationships are founded.
  • If you notice a member hasn't posted for some time .. send an email of You Have Been Missed!

Share in the ActiveRain fun and allow others to have their moment and recognition as well.

Tips to not be as reliant on the "line up" to attract readers:

  • Join varied groups and be sure to include your post to the appropriate group depending on your topic.
  • Be active on ActiveRain, comment frequently on other posts and don't just limit yourself to the magic 10comments per day points rewarded.
  • Subscribe and be loyal, others will in turn follow your posts.
  • Have topic content and shared thoughts on your posts.  Do not just post listings, recipes, stats all the time.  Have fun and make it fun for others to want to visit and read.
  • What draws you to read other posts?  Incorporate the same on your posts be it good pictures, current topics, layout, humor, etc.

Don't whine when you get a "0 viewings" and don't let this be a reason to stop blogging.  Create your voice and it will be heard!  You just need to find it first.

Connie, I agree.  It would be courteous if AR members didn't post 10 posts at once on market stats or listings.  All very good points, I'm suggesting...

This is a great post.  I appreciate your thoughts and tips.  I agree with you about people posting back to back to back.  Kind of crazy.  I just recently read from someone else about responding to peoples comments on your blogs.  I like this.  It had never occurred to me to do this, but it really makes a lot of sense.  I am going to subscribe to you.  Looking forward to more of your thought inspiring posts.  Cindy

That makes sense. I did about 5 straight market report blogs over 3 days. I am sure that was super boring.

I noticed this same thing yesterday when I posted a blog. I was already down to number five almost immediately after I hit the "Post" icon. I'm not liking that at all. Great topic and post.

Great points.

The end consumers will find a good post based on keywords and topic relevancy. They will find the post regardless of how fast it rolled of the blog roll.

Pamela - thanks for the honor of subscribing and I truly look forward to our chats through our posts & sharing ideas.  Also ... thanks for thinking my post was feature material .. thanks!  I just wrote it as I had experienced this very thing earlier today on another prior post .. made me think of how others must feel as well.

Cindy - I love to leave comments and then go back to the post later to see if the author responded.  Many do and it is always fun to read other comments as well from the other members.  Just makes your AR relationship build.  Also is a big thank you for the member's time to comment.

Chuck - You did spread it out over a few days.  These reports & listings certainly do have a part to our AR visibility and those who follow us from other areas are probably interested as well.  It just is when click, click and several all at once, who reads that?  Lost time for that member on exposure and does impact others by moving them down the line prematurely.

Kelsey - Same happened here .. felt your pain.  Glad you liked my thoughts!

Thanks for all for your comments .. hope to catch you on the lineup soon!

Thank you for this post with all the tips.  I am new to active Rain and have only done one post, with lots of reading and comments to other's posts.  It is good to know the way we should perhaps handle ourselves as we post.  Thank you again.

I agree with you that hogging the blog roll reflects poorly on the agent.

And some of the content posted should have some frame of reference in real estate.

Hi Connie:

All great points.

Once Active Rain changed the posts in allowing both member only and public posts to show on the line up, once you make a post...then's gone!!!

Mike - even listings & stats can be appreciated but in moderation.  Over exposure and it just sours the others that just posted.  Some personal mix about the agents, not real estate related is just fine .. it goes to building the relationship and enjoying the personality.  But I do feel that there should be a nice concentration of posts regarding real estate content .. good of the author and great for the readers.

Toula - you & I have seen the magic disappearing post .. on and off in a wave of a wand or in this case several postings of listings from the same person.  Thanks as always for the hello and thoughts.

Thanks for the great comments!

Can I add one more thing....for the folks who in charge of the various groups? There are several groups that I'm getting ready to drop because so many of the featured posts are years old. Someone is asleep at the wheel! And many of the more current posts have nothing to do with the subject matter.  Perhaps if people would be more thoughtful about what groups they are posting to, it wouldn't get so crowded.

Carol - excellent point.  I go through my list of those posts I subscribe & groups as well and then purge or freshen.  I try to allocate my time wisely and give 100% to those I elect to affiliate.  If I find that they have gone out of the business or the group manager just has not continued to keep up with the group then I move on to others I can enjoy.
