Video Home Staging Tour - Before & After

Here is a video tour of a home in North Vancouver that we recently staged.  Although this home was built in the 1980's, it had been updated inside, complete with arts & crafts style molding, updated paint colours, and granite kitchen countertops and stainless steel appliances.

In this video tour, I take you from the outside of the home, into the vacant property.  There's no life or personality to the rooms.  After we staged the home, I walk you through again, only this time the rooms have come to life and feel warm and inviting.  Rooms are now clearly defined, and one can visualize how the rooms might be set up and used.

Pamela - Thanks so much.  I have to admit that finding out there was a video blogging group here on Active Rain really spurred me on.  I had the footage on my video camera for about 2 weeks, and just needed to get it to the next step.  I'm hoping that tuning into Brad Andersohn this morning will give me some ideas, too - it's all very exciting!

Sally, I love that you did a video of this staging job.  You did a fabulous job staging it and of videoing it.  You were so professional.  Will you still remember us little people when you're a big TV star?  Do you mind me asking what sort of video camera you used?  You're footage is so polished!

Julie - Lots more ideas up my sleeve - I just need more victims staging jobs to practice with!

Charlene - Thanks so much!  I actually used the Flip camera that I self-gifted at Christmas time - mine is the HD version - it was super on sale at our local bookstore a while back.  I love it - it's a case of pressing the red button to record - that's pretty much it.  Afterwards, you pull out the computer jack thingy, and shove it into the side of your computer.  I have a Mac, so I plopped the footage into imovie, then uploaded to YouTube "et voila"!

David - You're too kind.  Of course, I'm my own worst critic, so I can see where there's room for huge improvement, but it was not bad for a first attempt.

You should be on Design Star! Their presentations are horrid compared to yours. Bravo, bravo. I commend you not only for trying this but for doing such a wonderful job. It would take me 53 takes to get it right!

Peter/Linda - Thanks so much for your pfantastic comments!  I'm loving this video blogging - as home stagers are all about the visual, it sure makes sense for us to use this medium.

Shar - Design Star?!  I'm not so sure...  but certainly the Sally Stager in Vancouver Show!  Shar, you've got to try this - you'd be amazed at how easy it actually is.  I think part of the beauty of this rough style of video blogging, is that you don't have to be perfect, and that the imperfections almost make it more human.  Go for it!

Nyssa - Thanks so much.  Sometimes it's a hard sell to convince the owners to stage a property that already has great finishes, but we're going for the "emotion".  Just had a call from the listing agent yesterday, and there is already an offer on the table!  Woo hoo!

Laura - Yes, well, you can just line up over there for my autograph...  Ha ha ha!

Anna - Thanks so much Anna, that's very sweet of you.  I had a horrible cold that day, too, so my voice doesn't quite sound like me...  but the show must go on!

Once again, Sally, a fabulous job on your staging.  I'm in the midst of doing a staging and could kick myself for not videoing it before I staged.  The woman decided to have a contractor come in and fix ceilings and walls, replaced the carpet, updated the lighting, etc., etc., so it would have been perfect.  Having seen yours, I'll be sure to remember next time!

Christine - Hey, you could still do a video pointing out what you did "after", without including the "before".  Video taping a staging job really seems to make sense.  And it can save on a lot of text and typing!  Don't you love it when the homeowner is open to updating the place?  I'm about to stage a home where no upgrades whatsoever have been made.

Thanks so much for the congratulations.  I'm actually Canadian Rookie Stager of the Year - Birgit Anich won Rookie Stager of the Year.  Woooo hoooo!

Great use of video for a before and after staging tour. You did a superb good of narrating as we went through the rooms both before and after. What a difference your staging makes. I don't know if the Flip has a wide angle attachment such as the Kodak Zi8 does but I would think so. You might find that useful to give a wider view of the room. It works well on the Kodak. Sue - Thanks so much for your kind comments and your great feedback!  No, the Flip is "simple" to the max - no attachements etc.  I'll definitely investigate the Kodak Zi8 - a wide angle would definitely be an improvement.

Pam - Thanks so much - I hope it will be the first video of many!  Ah, the video did disappear for a little while - it went "pear shaped", but the wonderful people at Active Rain fixed it, so it's back up now.

Craig - Thanks so much for your help getting this post fixed and back up and running!  I was actually staging again today, and have some more footage...  the home today was a vacant townhouse.  My assistant left early, so it's just me talking in the background.  So excited to hear your thoughts and get your feedback.  Thanks again, and congratulations on becoming a mediator here in the Vbloggers Group!
