How many towns do not have an internet MLS?

MLSI was working with a client who had her home listed in another state. She wanted to purchase a home here in the Austin area as soon as her home sold. I contacted her agent to get her thoughts on our clients home since I wasn’t able to find it on the internet anywhere.

I was surprised to find out they do not have a MLS. When something comes on the market, they run flyers around to the other broker’s offices…. Like the good old days! Some do send an email, but there is no MLS for them. My broker says there is a lot of little towns that way.

I had written a post about print advertising, and how many agents don’t use print advertising at all. Most felt I was out of my mind to suggest that all folks over 50 don’t all use the internet. Well, here are towns that the real estate markets are behind the times.

Do you know any markets that do not have an internet based MLS for the real estate agents?

What state is that, if I may ask?  Even in the old days with no internet, we still had MLS.  It came in big fat black & while books.

Sherry, New Mexico has a high percentage of smaller communities in rural areas. We have several MLS boards throughout the state which encompass all of our communities and feed MLS listings online to realtor.com. Of course, not every licensed agent in New Mexico is a member of a local board and in those cases, their listings would not be visible in our state-wide MLS network of boards and associations.

Oh wow, I can't imagine what that would be like!  I wasn't in real estate when they relied on the fat MLS books, but I remember seeing one once.

Maureen-She was in Natchitoches, Louisiana  This was 3 years ago, I think they have recently added an MLS.

Ann-I think my first home I remember the agent having the big book.

Emily-As I suggested, I think it alot of small towns.

Bill- no kidding!

I was surprised that the agent had not used Postlets or something to get it out on the internet. I thought it would be a market some techie would jump on.  Can't imagine how hard it would have been to get something going for the agents to list properties on. Heck, even Facebook would work for them!

Amanda-Well every state is different, every board is different. Boards are generally country/town specific, and depending on the size of the county/town, depends.  I was totally surprised about the LA one.  I knew the town was only an hour from Shreveport, never thought about them not having one.  She said at the time they were working on it, but I just assumed in this day and age, everyone would have one.  My broker was aware of some Texas towns that don't have one. Very small towns, and everyone knows everyone.
