If You Can Guess What This Is ... You Win!

I suppose this is not really a contest in the "Wow, I just won a contest" sense, because there are no prizes, trips or giveaways, but you will definitely be able to tell your friends and family that you guessed the purpose of a strange looking thing in a photo and no one can ever take that away. I will congratulate the correct guesser(s) tomorrow.

Did You Think I Would Really Put The Name of This Here?

Hi

Thats an old snow roller. I remember my dad using one in Cabot Vermont when I was young. At the time they rolled the back dirt roads so it didn't tear them up.

looks like the asphalt flattener of today sorta.. (a motorless version) and sense there wasn't asphalt back then, I'd say it was to flatten the dirt roads.. could be fun to ride i bet!

Hello John,  I've never seen such a contraption but I'm guessing somebody pulls it with a truck while you sit in the chair and get a great vibration that will reduce the amount of cellulite on your butt.  Is that right?

The correct guesser would be ... Darryl with snow roller! I would not have guessed you would be old enough to have ever seen one of these. "Way back when," they rolled the snowy roads for the horse drawn sleighs used in lieu of horse drawn wagons in the winter. The roller seating accomodated two men and the whole works typically pulled by four horses. This all worked fine until Spring came along and the rolled snow rutted horribly. I came across this reproduction in the center of Canaan, NH a few years ago.

The most creative guess award goes to Marian! I am still laughing out loud!

Thanks to Donna and Sheila for your guesses as well!

Roy - Thanks for stopping by. When I was a kid, I used to hang out with "old timers," and it was from them I learned about snow rollers. Although I had never seen one, forty years later, I knew instantly what this was and how it was used.

I would not have known it was for snow, but I knew it was for flattening something.  We used to have a similar type contraption that was pushed by hand for leveling dirt.

Sharon - There are dirt rollers as well. Hard to imagine horse drawn equipment when we grew up with gas and diesel powered cars and trucks. The advent of the internal combustion engine changed all that and brought snow plows along.

Well, I was going to say it has a seat for sitting, and a tongue for being pulled and it's for flattening something!!!

Marilyn - Your assumptions were all correct! You know, I somehow think it would be a better world if we could go back to rolling snow and taking sleigh rides. :)

I thought perhaps it was a very large ravioli press. :)

Toni - Thanks for dropping by. Now that I think of it, with ridges added in the right places, and a lot of real estate, you probably could roll out quite a sheet of ravioli. :-)

John ~ I'm guessing first and will then go back and read the comments already made.  It looks like something that was probably pulled by horses and the seat on the top was for the person to direct the horses where to go.  And the round thing they sat on would flatten or smooth out the dirt road.  But I don't have a name for it.  Now I'll read the other answer.

Okay John ~ I was real close!  I almost added that it could pack down the snow as well, before I hit submit, but didn't.  This was fun!

What an interesting contraption  (one of my favorite words...:) )

I started to write that we don't get that much snow here so there was no way I would have known it was a snow roller ... but then I hesitated because this year we have gotten plenty of snow.

Was this the means to travel on snow packed roads?  Or to help melt the snow?  Forgive my ignorance.. like I said, we don't usually deal with much snow here.

Judi - This equipment was used to pack the snow on the roads so horse drawn sleighs could easily navigate. Before the automobile, winter meant going from horse drawn wagons and buggies to horse drawn sleighs as a means of transportation. Thanks for stopping by!
