A major part of home staging is de-cluttering. For most people, it is not exactly a pleasant task, but it is oh so necessary. Think about how good you feel in a room that has been cleared of stacks of paper and piles of books and magazines. You want buyers to have that feeling when they view your house. When you’re selling your home, you’ll want to take de-cluttering a step further. Look at your shelves. Are they full of books, collectibles and tchotchkes? When we’re living in our homes we surround ourselves with the things that that bring us comfort and happiness but, when you put your house on the market you don’t want buyers to be distracted by your stuff. Your house is the main attraction so why not start packing away some of your things, your house will show much better if you do. Once you’ve finished the shelves, look at the room as a whole. Can you tell how big the room is? Is there furniture blocking the view of the fireplace or the great view of the backyard? When you look into the room is it the room you notice or the furniture? You may have to remove a couple of pieces of furniture to make the room flow better. Remember, your mantra should be, “It’s about the house not the stuff.” Now what? You’ve packed away the clutter, but you’re left with several boxes and a few spare pieces of furniture. Below are a few ideas for dealing with the items you’ve removed from your house:
- Rent a storage unit;
- Have a garage sale;
- Give it to charity;
- Neatly store it in the attic;
- Use part of the garage (leave enough room to park at least 1 car;
- Store it in a crawl space;
- As a last resort sacrifice a third or fourth bedroom and fill it full;
- Ask a generous neighbor or relative if you can store your things at their house.
This may all seem like a lot of work, but the payoff just may be a quick sale!
Wishing you a quick sale!
Kathy
