Removing Snow off Your Roof

Living in New England we are used to shoveling walkways, driveways, and sidewalks. With the snow we've had this winter we are now shoveling our roofs!

I'm lucky that my roof has such a pitch that I don't have to worry about it, but I do have two porch roofs (Why isn't that spelled rooves?) that need to be shoveled off.

How safe is it to shovel off a roof? I haven't heard of anyone falling so far this year, which is a good thing, lol. But every time I see someone up there I can't help but worry for them.

But there's also danger in not removing it - a roof can start to leak or even collapse under the weight of the snow. Some buildings such as barns have collapsed.

We now have a new tool for winter - a roof rake. It looks like this.

I googled and it looks like they cost around $30-50. So they're a lot more expensive than a shovel. I saw many people up on ladders raking their roofs, but I also saw people right up there on the roof pushing the snow off. Scary stuff!

So here's the instructions for raking your roof.

1. Shovel a clear path around the perimeter of your house (So that you can have a sure place to put the ladder.

2. Walk the path to pack the snow and make sure that the ground is firm and your ladder won't sink with you on it.

3. Have someone on the ground spotting you so you don't fall. Just don't pull the snow on their heads.

4. Pull the snow off the roof keeping a thin layer of snow on the roof. You don't want to damage the shingles. Also, make sure you buy a plastic rake so you don't damage your shingles.

If you have a lot of icicles (or deathcicles as my daughter calls them), you are probably losing a lot of heat through your roof.

Here in the Pocono's we also got enough snow that some of us had to shovel the snow off our roofs. My house has more than enough pitch, but my garage has almost a flat roof. My husband has to climb on that one to get the snow off.

Crystal -

Having been a builder since 1973, I worry that roof rakes DAMAGE THE SHINGLES.

I am including a You Tube link here --  shows a timed "CONTEST" between a roof rake and a snow cutter.

IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE: The SNOW CUTTER, invented by Kent Phillips from Pennsylvania, keeps its distance from the shingles!

Have a happy day -
Lynn

Crystal, I tried to re-blog but AR is not allowing it right now. This is such an important advice right now, for our area.

BTW, I was going to ask you about Jennifer Allan's book. I found it interesting that she was thanking someone with your name in her book "Selling with soul"! I cannot put the book down. I think it should be a mandatory read for anyone starting out, in the business. I wish I had read it months ago, but never too late!

Suesan, you have to be careful that your garage doesn't collapse under the weight of the snow.

You're welcome, Carol. I'm not sure it can be done safely, but it's also not safe to leave it. Maybe hiring someone is the best idea.

Thanks, Joe.

We are all sick of the snow, Susan. The kids haven't had a full week of school since December.

Lucky you, Tim, lol. I only wish I lived somewhere that we didn't have to put up with this crap. I'd miss my family if I moved though. I guess the stork dropped me off at the wrong house.

Lynn, thanks for the video. That's what I was saying in #4 about being careful not to damage your shingles. I should have gone into a snow cutter in the post.

Thank you, Lydie. It's better to post a blog and link to this one anyway. That way you'll get 200 pts instead of just 25 for a reblog.

OMG, John. Snowblowers on a roof! Scary indeed.

Yeah, Michele. I get scared watching people up there. I wonder if the snow would cushion the fall or if you'd just fall right through it. Hmmm...
