Southwestern Style Homes in Las CrucesEvery year we work with new people who fall in love with Southwestern style homes. Las Cruces' Southwestern style, sometimes called Santa Fe or Pueblo style, has a unique blend of southwestern architecture that matches our unique culture.

There's no doubt about it, if you're moving to Las Cruces from back east, you will fall in love with the space, privacy and designs that you find in the Southwest. We have yet to work with someone who has asked if they can buy an apartment on the 4th floor of a high rise.

Southwestern style is unique with clean lines, rounded corners, low pitched or flat roofs, organic materials, rustic furnishings, natural colors, cool tile and unique kiva fire places. Here are a few of the most common elements of southwestern homes that you find today and in the past.

Adobe
Pueblo style homes are built with walls of organic bricks called Adobe. Adobe was used because of its durability and its efficient insulation. Made of clay, straw and water, adobe bricks were the primary building tools in the Southwest United States for many centuries. Today because of the efficiency, and popularity of Southwestern style there is a resurgence of interest and appreciation for these traditional building methods and materials.

Beams
Large round beams, or vigas, are one of the hallmarks of Southwestern architecture. The beams supported the ceilings and often protruded through the facade, which gave the adobe home the appearance of a fortress.

Courtyards
Today's Southwestern style homes often have courtyards with a fountain and/or a pool. This provides a great area for socializing and relaxing. This trend began because historic southwestern homes had thick walls built for protection. The walls extended from two sides of the home, creating a courtyard where you could often find the well. This courtyard provided a safe place for children to plan, household chores to be done and for social functions.

Other Qualities of Today's Southwestern Home

While many southwestern homes today are not built of adobe, they were built to look as if they were. Today you often find large living rooms with tall ceilings, sometimes two stories high. Elaborate and detailed fountains are often used to provide rich accent colors. Nichos (an indented portion of the wall) work well for storage and displaying artwork. Sometime nichos are used for seating as well. The courtyards of the past provided protection, today they provide seclusion, privacy and simplicity. You still find exposed beams on the interior of your home, but today they are more beautiful than functional.
