I had the opportunity to attend a Douglas County charter school prinicpal's meeting this morning. Various topics were on the agenda, but I have found myself hanging on one particular statement. Something to the effect of, "We can plan on approximately 13% property tax depreciation in 2011".
I am very aware of how most aspects of our economy have been affected over the past two years as we live through this downturn. Ignorantly, I never thought of how the depreciation of home values is affecting schools through taxes. The fact that most home owners are watching their greatest investment lose significant value is bad enough. To make the connection that these declining values are directly impacting kids stinks!
It's estimated that schools in Colorado to receive ~$1.8 billion from property taxes.
Here's a link to the Colorado Department of Education web page that details their finances.

Over the coming months I 'll be watching closely to see what actually happens with our school's financing.
