The original Burke Gilman trail connected Gas Works Park and Tracy Owen Station in Kenmore 12.1 miles away.

The trail was formerly owned by Burlington Northerner Railroad and was abandon in 1971 a citizen group launched a campaign to acquire the abandon railroad tracks and turn it into a non-motorized public biking and walking trail. After some opposition from residents living around the trail was overcome the City of Seattle and the University of Washington go developed the original 12.1 mile route from Gas Works Park to Tracy Owen station

Most of the original trail that follows the west shoreline of Lake Washington has been added on to extending east to Marymoor Park in Redmond and west to Ballard passing the locks and ending at Shilshole Bay. There are plenty of small pocket parks to stop for a swim or picnic or bike to Woodinville for week-end wine tasting.

The trail can become extremely busy during peak week-end hours in the summer filled with joggers, cyclist, walkers, and skaters. During week it serves as commuter trail for cyclist choosing to choose and alternative to driving into work.

Winding through many of Seattle's popular neighborhoods the "Burke" has become an extremely popular amenity for people living in the area and for future home buyers looking to purchase in one of the neighborhoods that feed into it.

Adrian - What a wonderful resource for the area.  I would think that neighborhoods along the trail would be popular.
