Check the Fine Print: Situations That Could Invalidate Your Insurance Coverage

After your home is damaged by severe weather, or after you become sick with a serious illness, the last thing you want to worry about is whether or not your insurance policy will cover your bills. Many people assume that becomes they have insurance, they will be covered 100% of the time.

Unfortunately, the devil is in the details. The fine print of your insurance policy could contain stipulations that would invalidate your coverage in the event of an accident. Don't wait until an accident to find out whether you've invalidated your policy.

Insurance broker Linda Rey has written an excellent post on three common situations that could negate your coverage. Her message? Always read the fine print. Check out her blog now to avoid the shock of finding out you're not covered: http://insurance.equifax.com/2011/02/check-fine-print-situations-that-could.html

Unfortunately, I hear about this all the time. It is important to have all the coverage you'll ever need. We recently had a drainage ditch back up and flood a local neighborhood with 3 feet of water. Since it was not in the flood zone and a low income area, not one house had flood insurance.

This is so true and unfortunately people don't find the answer until something bad happens. Roofs collapsing, frozen pipes, etc here in the NE. I just wrote a blog on how a Realtor was blamed by the insuarance company when the pipes froze and are refusing to pay.....

As a Real Estate agent who handles short sales in Massachusetts, I am running into insurance companies that will not pay a frozen pipe claim on unoccupied houses.

Jeremy, Larry, and Kevin: You're right, this is an especially important issue to consider in the winter, when storms and frozen pipes can cause major property damage. It's more crucial than ever to make sure homeowners know the terms of their policies.

Hi Ilyce, Thanks for the great links!  As usual I have bookmarked and hope to explore them in depth later today.  I didn't realize until recently there was so much that could actually negate your coverage!
